Hi all.

The last two days I have been remastering Knoppix v3.4
(2004-05-17 BETA) in order to put on it POV-Ray for
Linux and some other POV-Ray related linux tools.

More info about Knoppix can be found here:
http://knoppix.net/

So far I have succeeded in producing a Knoppix CD that
contains POV-Ray v3.6 and Blender v2.32.

Both these applications seems to works ok so far.

On this page I see some more unix-tools listed:
http://www.povray.org/download/unix-tools.php

Maybe some of these and others could be put onto the
CD as well.

The Gimp v2.0, Netpbm v10 (?) and ImageMagick v6.0.1
are already on the CD.

Now some questions:

- Would anyone be interested in such a Knoppix CD ?

- Will there be any legal problems related to the
   distribution of it ?

- If not, how could/should it be distributed ?

- Does anyone have suggestions for other resources
   to put on it ?

- Could it in any way be used to promote POV-Ray or
help sponsoring of the POV-Ray development ?

I would be very interested. Contest for name? Contest for (shortest ;-> code

There is new distribution licence on the page with downloads.

IIRC Nicolas has used Knoppix for part of 3.6 development. Perhaps he already
found something useful. POV-Anywhere? Something for making animations from
stills with some GUI interface? Wings?

Look at http://www.opensourcelab.it/ . It already tells about POVRay but if it
is the same debian distribution of POV-Ray I have heard, then I prefer
something made by experienced POV user like you.

IMO existence within list
http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/KnoppixCustomizations
could already promote POV.

QTPov and Emacs pov-mode would certainly be useful (assuming
Emacs/XEmacs are in Knoppix by default).

Probably not, the new distribution license has a special point about
Linux distributions which will cover this as well.

> - If not, how could/should it be distributed ?

Availability on the net will probably be a good idea although a lot of
people will not like the download volume. It could be sold like the
IRTC CD-ROMs for supporting POV-Ray (although there would be less
motivation to buy it because it will be available for free as well).

It would be very good to also include some common include files (you
would have to obtain consent from the authors for this of course).

Furthermore:

- a newsreader preconfigured for news.povray.org
- IMP and POV-Anywhere clients preconfigured (the latter will require a
correctly configured MTA for using the email mode so this might be tricky)
- screensaver configured to show a slideshow of POV-Ray renders.

Hehe - Maybe we can arrange that if there is any interest.

OK. I have now skimmed through it and I think it seems ok to
distribute such a CD.

Hmmm...
I just had a quick look at that. It seems to contain a lot.
- I'll have to download it and try it out.

Good point.

Thank you for your comments.

I haven't tried that one yet.

I'm struggling a bit with QT and KPovModeler.
( ./configure doesn't seem to like/recognize the
installed QT version on Knoppix v3.4.)

Hopefully the installation of QTPov will go smoother.

Ok.

My ISP doesn't allow me to set up any servers for
incoming traffic, so maybe I'll have to share it via
bittorrent or something similar.

Good idea.

Yes - But I have beeen wondering if a preconfigured
username and email address would cause any troubles for
these news-groups.

I haven't configured any MTA's yet so maybe I'll need
help to do this.

I once started reading the sendmail manual, but it scared
me away =(

Yes. Does anyone know about any good such screensavers ?

Thank you for your good suggestions.

Knoppix for 3.6 development - Thats interesting.

I *think* I have managed to install Wings. But I
don't like the way it is done now. I'll do some
testing and try to find a better way to install it.

Any suggestions for useful animation tools would
be nice.

The tools I cannot live without when POVing in the Windows environment:

Wings 3d or similar free mesh modeller

Uvmapper or similar freetool ( Wings does have UV mapping support which
I could live with reluctantly.)

Poseray. Could get by with any free .obj2mesh2 converter but Poseray is
preferred.

Image editor. Gimp would be just fine I'm guessing.

Text editor. Prefer something at least as feature rich as what's
integrated in the Window's version of POV-Ray.

Nice to have:

Megapov

MLpov

I have already managed to make this one work.

Uvmapper seems to be a commercial product for Windows.

Any other alternatives ?

It seems that Poseray is only available for windows.

So I need suggestions for free/open ".obj2mesh2"-
converters.

The Gimp is great. The menu layouts has been much
improved in v2.0.

Emacs has more features and possibilities than most
people want. And many people find it hard to learn.

But most of those who do will not leave Emacs once
they have seen the light.

I guess that it will be possible to have both of these.

Wings is ok, but I'm struggling a bit with KPovModeler.

These are ok too.

Jpatch and Arabeske seems to be GNU GPL-ed.

But for POV-Tree I did not find any license information
on it's web-pages. So I will have to ask Gena Obukhov and
Tom Aust for permission to include it.
