Just out of curiosity....

Why do the developers of POV-Ray do it? The fame, the glory, the fast cars,
the hot chicks?....

Second question, and I'm really not being rude here just curious, do any of
the POV developers trace a lot of stuff - most of the pages I've visited,
such as Ron's, are fairly sparsely populated when it comes to actual
ray-tracing....

As I see it, there is 2 types of POV-Ray users: one type can create good
pictures (H.E.Day, G. Tran, J. Piqueres, M. Semprini to name few),
others know how to program it. Here second type could be divided to 2
separate parts as well: those who know well source code and those, who
know know well POV-Ray language. It is called Specialization, I
believe...
Of course some of users can do fairly well in all 3 categories (or in
1st and 3rd).
Unfortunately I with my abilities don't belong to any of above mentioned
group, my top achievements are represented in p.o-t. :-(

Pretty much my thoughts....

I gave up worrying about being any good at raytracing about five seconds
after seeing my first HE Day, and now I just enjoy it.

Speaking for me, i often simply don't take the time to put the traces on my
site.  I also don't think every simple trace i do is worth publishing.  

Furthermore Povray is much more than simply doing pictures (Vahur Krouverk
already mentioned that ), I would say it's often mainly about "developing
techniques".  

And finally POVers tend to be perfectionists, so a scene can only be put on a
site when it is finished, and when will that ever be... ;-)

Ah, ya caught me.  See, I've spent all that free time I should have been
spending on tracing on debugging instead.  The last time I spent any serious
time thinking about and developing a scene was for the "ruins" round of the
IRTC, and I didn't finish that.  Before that, it was the entry I actually
submitted for the "Imaginary Worlds" round.  Most of the rest of my work
can be found in the weird textures I've posted to this server here and
there.

Truth be told, I'm far better at modeling individual objects and textures 
than I am at composing them all in a pleasing scene, so most of my work 
never gets past that stage.

I enjoy those masterpieces as well. But still, something keeps bugging
me. There is saying "stupid but persistent". I hope that when I get
enough time for persistence of vision, then perhaps I can make something
good. Or at least better than my previous works. Perhaps when I
retire...

I'm not sure if I count as a developer.  The motivation for me is a desire for
a particular feature.  If someone else was willing to do it, I'd be happy to
let them, but there is only so much each person can do.  Collectively it winds
up as something pretty amazing though.

I trace more than I program, or at least I used to.  When you're programming,
you tend to make a lot of demo scenes and not too much complex artsy shyt.
It's really hard to do both.  Maybe when scientists find a cure for sleep...

Thought I was in the p.o-t. group at first.
Just occured to me, wonder whatever happened to Govert Zoethout and those
thought provoking images he always posted with letters for titles?
Back on-topic:
Well, it pains me to think any POV-Ray developer might not be ray tracing some
works of art, if so many of us are in that same boat  ;-)  except remember
that art is subjective and such.
It's a lot to do with the fascinating computer-generation side of it all too
probably, at least I sure get a thrill out of knowing the pictures are
actually comprised of 1's and 0's.
And you couldn't say everyone is a great artist or great programmer, just many
more in-betweens.  I'm content with being that, if I can even dare say I'm
in-between, so long as I don't dwell on it too long  :-)
I often wonder how much is done by the POV-Team renderwise because it seems to
go along with the job title (pardon my language please).  Demo scenes are all
we ever see from them practically.  You'd have to go looking up their names
for web pages of uploaded stuff besides.  Something I have seldom done.
