You now have a better understanding as to why I never submitted anything.
I'm sure I'd upload a sloppy set of files there.

Which ones did you try - I'm fairly sure mine always work although I'll
leave out famous includes and maybe supply lower res. image-maps/hfs/etc.

Mine render as posted. Perhaps you've selected images that are dependent
on imagemaps or models that aren't included. Such is often noted in the
.txt file.

It could be both. I happened to submit incomplete sources, mostly
by forgetting to include someting that was on another path, sometimes
on a vonlutary basis, to prevent exact re-rendering. However, in
the latest case, it was just some missing, unimportant detail.

I'll simply advise you to write to the author of the file you
wanna render, I'm sure she/he will happily help you !

Fabien.

I usually leave out the bitmap used for ident, as I feel it's not part
of the scene. But I've just checked the .zip file on my HD and it's
there this time.

Maybe you're just unlucky.

When I was entering stuff in the IRTC, I was always so close to the deadline
that I would be a bit sloppy in putting together the code. At times I'd
accidentally forget to include some INC file that was off in a different
directory, or forget to change some of the hard-coded paths. I was always
more worried about the image than about the source.

I hope my scene will render (as long as you have the PCM macro installed)...

For the last round I entered, the zip file of all my source, meshes, image
maps etc came in at about 7 MB. I decided that it was more important
to submit the essential source without all the massive files that to upload
that monster.

That could explain the missing files, not sure about the others

I don't think anyone makes his/her files not workable just for the fun of
annoying fellow users... There are many reasons, already mentioned in this
thread. In my case, I put JPG image maps instead of PNG, because the zip file
would have been too big otherwise, so that you have to convert them back before
running some of the scenes. At least this won't be a problem with povray 3.5.

In some of my earlier animations I edited the same source file over
and over in order to produce the next shot. This makes it nearly
impossible to recreate the animation (Rusty's Late suffers from this
problem). For the later animations each shot has its own .INC file,
but some of the .INC files for individual models changed over the
course of the project, sometimes in a non-backwards compatible way.

The other problem, as other people have pointed out, is that some
source files are relatively well-known compilations of macros, and
were left out because the user assumes that everyone has it.

I'm no longer including my sources with my IRTC entries because I
don't want other people using Rusty (et amicos) without my involvement.

Regards,
John
