Can someone explain to me why the text at the site below is not readable ?
Mostly I see bunch of little boxes with text headers in english. Is it
a language setting problem with netscape ? I tried different settings but
it made little difference.

The ".jp" indicates the site is hosted in Japan. I don't have my browsers set
to show pages in anything other than english. As a result, when I drop in on
Finnish, Japaneze, etc... sites, I see the gobbledeegook you seem to have
seen. I tried backtracking to the fellow's index page, but could not find any
obvious link to a set of english language pages.

I suspected the .jp connection but wanted confirmation that my software wasn't
wigging out on me :)

<grin> These days, that's quite a valid concern. For instance, I just rebooted
because when I clicked on something on my desktop, it registered clicks on upwards
of a half a dozen icons all at the same time. And, of course, I was lucky enough to
be trying to double-click on my email program. :{P Nothing like having half a dozen
programs all trying to load at the same time on my tired old P166. Turns out the
keyboard cable was loose and was registering as if the shift-key was being pressed.

It is a side in Japanese. Usually you need to setup your OS to support these
character systems. I know that Windows can work with both, Russian and
English systems, so I suppose by installing some extra libraries you can get
support for all languages (in this case Japanese) under a regular English
(or any other language) Windows...

Finnish? I have never seen such a page in Finland. I think that they all
use regular latin-1 coding.

I don't even have latin-1 coding as an option in my version of Netscape.
I have my default set to western ISO 8859-1 and have options to various
flavours of Baltic, Central Europe, Chinese, Cyrillic, Greek, Japanese,
Korean, Turkish, and Unicode.

All you need to do is have a Japanese font installed on your system.
You can get the Bitstream Cyberbit font, or just go to Microsoft's IE site and
get the "international language packs". All they really are is just a font file
and a .NLS file. They install to the system, so then Netscape can use whatever
language you put in.

Ken:
I love a good mystery.
The respondants have taken what seems to be the right tack. Japanese
consistently mix in western characters and names, even in their
Japanese-language printed material. All without translation or even
transliteration. Just 'plop.'
BUT... a look at the HTML source does NOT remind me of Unicode or extended
character sets. Too many $-signs and not enough characters wrapping into
the upper range of the normal 255-character ASCII set. It doesn't look
like other Japanese sites, if memory serves.
If my off-the-cuff peek has led me astray... I'll blame it on sleep
deprivation. If not, I'd guess somebody's HTML editor DLL went all scwewy.
If this helps, hows about some comments on my Image Size vs. Rendering Times
problem?

If you like, I could run this by a couple of my clients in Japan-- one a
magazine editor.
If this helps, hows about some comments on my Image Size vs. Rendering Times
