One possibility most people encounter is probably related to quiting at some
point even though you could adjust and finalize a render virtually forever.
In other words, "send what you got".
This will be the case for my first.

Is it ok to put IRTC entries in the web before the deadline of the current
IRTC topic? I thought it's forbidden (it gives unfair advantage because
people can see the image before all the other entries).

Hmm I see it the other way. I for one show mine to as little people as
possible. That way the WOW factor is still there (provided you have an
image that can get a WOW factor). If you show it to much then people get to
used to it.
Just a thought

I don't think so..
I think, if anything, it gives the creator of the published picture a
DISadvantage over the rest of the competitors.
They're letting out what they're doing, and therefore giving other entrants an
idea of what sort of work they have to do to try and win. Not just send it in
and hope nothing else is better.
Although, the image they actually put on the web, and the final image they
enter, can, and probably will be, completely altered and tweaked.

It is uncommon, but it is done. There is no rule against it. People
have been known to publish preliminary or even final images on the web
and request comments to improve them. This is, as I said, rare but
legal. The IRTC is more about making good images, pushing the envelope
and sharing techniques than about cutthroat competition. The "contest"
aspect is (supposed to be) secondary.

Seems like a short time doesn't it? Even though we're given a whole two
months!
I think that what eats up the most time is the time I spend just looking at
the image and trying to decide if it's ready. I usually start with a plan,
but I always find that given a few days to reflect on the image, I always want
to add more to it. After awhile, it's like it's not even about the IRTC
anymore. I need to get it just right or I'll be miserable with myself for
having spent so much time on it and not getting it just how I want it.
Which reminds me...I need to finish this darn thing! What am I doing online?
;)

I also think that showing the submission before the deadline is a
disadvantage for the creator.
I really like to look at the new pictures there and when there is one I
already know I just say: "OK, I know that one! -- and then go on.
But to my eyes its not a contest in classical sense but a opening day at
the gallery. *Every* picture there contains an idea and most of the time
a lot of work and there is no way to learn something about raytracing
and the capabilities of Povray than to look at them and ask
yourself:"How has she/he done *THAT*!"
It's the way I learned my tricks.

The difference is not that you see it _before_, but that you see it
alone.
At least for me, I can enjoy an image much more, when I see it alone,
not
in this overwhelming mass of images you get in one zipped IRTC-round.
Although I am enjoying every picture on it's own it is work for me to
vote or just see through _all_ of them.
I do think that pre-releasing gives an advantage, but as this is not
professional
sports, the fun-increase I get seeing one before several hours after
deadline
is worth a lot more for me.
(I tend to check ftp.irtc.org every 30 min. when I
can't wait any longer, only this round I will boykot Deutsche Telekom on
Sunday
the 1st, as there is a national internet-strike that day, we want
cheaper connections
from the quasi-monopolist.)

O-kay...
Is there still any question as to my stage-fright when I'm thinking of
submitting an entry?
I would think not, anymore.
Just keep that sheparding hook-staff thing handy on the sidelines, because
it's going there no matter what.
By the way I'm going to order this years IRTC CDrom.
Don't know if it has "zips" of images/animations or what, but afraid I'll
literally find myself mesmerized in the massive quantity I usually only see as
a trickle on the web.
