Umm, hi!
I've got the new povray here, from povray.org, AFTER it was announced.
BUT the file pvengine still shows it's properties as BETA version.
Did you/they just forget to delete this from that section of the file
(the version info, at the end od the file), or have I missed something.
I've tried to get this 3 times, from 3 diff sites, inc Twisted's site.
All say beta version.....

What's important is what the Help About dialogs say.
Obviously they forgot to change the resource from
Beta to V3.10, but who cares?

The following is an excerpt from the pvengine.exe file (near end) in case
anyone else is wondering what Morpheus was originally talking about.
This obviously has nothing to do with the actual version as R.H.Morrison
pointed out. Hope I am doing nothing wrong by cutting and pasting this bit of
the file here, thought it might keep others from being confused, as I was.
Also, I have heard mention of version "r1a" not just r1 and this is apparently
due to the fact that 3.1.r1 is referred to as 3.1a at povray.org. Don't know
about the specifics, beta 6? was the last of the betas as I understand it.

Pov 3.1r1 and Pov 3.1a may be to identify a minor bug change that
occured the week the official version was released. It had something
to do with the crackle testure and I believe one of the non windows
version features. Chris Young made an anouncement on both
povray.general and c.g.r.r.about this if you want to look up the specifics.

Crackle and the turbulence warp were messing with the RNG, and there were
a couple of things broken in other places: a missing case in blob cylinders,
and a problem that must have led to unopened files attempting to be closed
in the expression parser. I'm not 'in the know' or anything, I just happen
to keep all of the old official releases of source code around for my
superpatch work, and these are the things a quick 'diff -ur' shows.
In addition to 3.1a, there were some other small changes made in the Windows
code between the release of the official binary and the release of the
official source. Some of us call this 3.1a+, though nobody knows what
the POV-Team calls it (still 3.1a in optout.h) and it's the codebase the
next version of the superpatch will derive from.

The rule is simple: r1, r2, etc for platform fixes and a, b, etc for core code fixes.
So may look like this:
3.1 // official, generic core change
3.1r1 // official, platform change only
3.1r2 // official, platform change only
3.1a // official, generic core and platform fix
3.1a.r1 // official, platform change only

But what if it's an official change that's only available in source form?
That appears to be what we have here. Is it still r2 if there's no binary
version?

Oh, I see. The numbering applies to the at least compiled version: I don't know about
the windows source code changes, but I suspect (I can't know for sure, I only have
the latest Windows source code somewhere on my Mac harddisk and never compiled it
yet) that they are only there to get it compile (without errors) on different
compilers or fix possible mini bugs that do not justify a full re-release. I think
you are refering to the preliminary source he posted for testing, aren't you?
