I've been away from the POV-Ray scene (terrible pun, but not initially
intended; please forgive me) for a while, and just installed the new Windows
version.  I love the new editor (feels more like a true development
environment now), but was kind of disappointed to find that I couldn't
automatically bring in my old customized template.

On that note, I'd like to request a converter for the old template. (as per
the notice in the changes.txt file, which I hope is still valid)

I noticed in "changes.txt" that the Insert menu had been changed from the
old style to a set of individual text files.  While this makes it much
easier to generate encapsulated insertion files, I miss the layout control
and unified modification capabilities of the old template.

The mod caps I can get over (I like hard-tabs, and a search and replace is
much easier to do on a single file, but I think the benefit of encapsulation
outweighs this minor gripe), but I'd like to be able to rearrange the
sub-menus and their contents to represent some (non-alpha) logical order
(Headers -> Light Sources -> Expressions -> Shapes, etc.) without resorting
to adding prefixes to the directory and file names (00_Headers -> 01_Light
Sources...).  I guess the best example of this would be the IE4 Bookmarks
directory, wherein, sections and bookmarks can be rearranged, but are kept
in a directory (folder) rather than the Netscape/old template-style single
file.

I too have a customized 3.02 Insert Menu template file.
I wondered how many people would have to nag (heh-heh) about this convertor 
that's  mentioned. I didn't want to seem pushy about getting this right away 
(if it is indeed possible at all). Figured I would need time with 3.1 before 
editing the Insert Menu again anyway.
Since so much does work the same as before though, and my 3.02 template is 
quite extensive, this "convertor" would be a great thing.

I've posted this in povray.binaries.programming. It's very simple but should do
the job. Note that I've not tested it anywhere other than an NT4 system, so it
may not work on other boxes. I'll fix it if that's the case.

Funnily enough, this is the one of the major reasons that I don't use IE.

We appreciate that it can be an irritation and will look into providing a way
to order it sometime.

Actually, same here, but I can't stand the newer (4.0+) Netscape versions,
especially the "Collabra" newsreader, so I switch between Nav 3.04 and IE4
depending on what I feel like that day.

Thanks for posting the converter, it works perfectly in 95b as well.

And thanks again for all the new features built into the new interface: the
dragable render area select tool is great for text placement (among other
things; I only mention it because I have an animation rendering in the
background on which I made rather extensive use of that).

Wow, that was fast!
Well, not all good news here though.
Seems that 'Save' errors with "Invalid Filename" when attempt is made to write 
to the P-R 3.1 Insert Menu folder (moved original first though).
Only the first section (folder) gets written. It must be something wrong with 
my template file. I'll look into it.
I also have Win95b.

Okay, answer to the problem is:
remove any forward slashes from menu item headings if any exist.
Other punctuation, characters, seem alright. I have exclamation dash and comma 
in my pov3templ.txt and it converts fine now with the slashes removed.
I don't mean ANY forward slashes, such as double comment ones in the body of a 
menu item, only that the headings can't contain them.

Collabra was killed off in NN4.5, btw. :) The mail and news readers
merged code. Almost as good as Agent w/ a built in a browser now. Well,
almost. Getting there. :)
