I'm pretty new to news groups so tell me if I do something wrong...
I went to use povray last night and for some reason pvengine.exe causes a
page fault in module unknown. I'm not sure which ver was installed at the
time because the first thing I did was reinstall it.. I'm fairly sure it
was ver 3.02. Anyway, the last time I used povray at home was about 2.5
months ago (worked fine then) as I usually use povray at work (on the
'fast' computers).
It comes down to this: ver 3.02 will run, but crashes when you start a
render (at the point where it would normally pop up the display window,
scene parses fine).. ver 3.00e however runs fine.. At work I have the exact
same problem, ver 3.10 runs fine.

any ideas?/known bugs
-Cedar

ps. Personally I miss Maximinimise, and I don't like the fact that you have
to save a file in order to render it in V3.10.. (unless I havn't found the
peticular option yet)

I have the exact same problem with 3.0x trying to narrow the cause down now.
Let me know if you find the problem

You didn't mention which OS you are using. If it's win3.1, that could explain
it.

There are a few other things that can cause a crash. Using too high a
max_trace_level or too many objects than you have memory for can do it.

Just a few things I know of. Any fit the bill?

Oops, sorry.. it's win95.
I don't think it's either of those because a scene of:
camera { location -z look_at 0 }
box { 0,1 }
won't even render.. also, it used to work just fine..about 2-3 months
ago, I just can't figure out what I've changed. Thoughts on swap/temp
space? I've changed my swap file and temp locations back to what they
were before, even though it's less that what I have now, and same
thing. Tried rebuilding the registry, tried using a registry from 7
months ago to no avail. As to what I've changed, I added a scsi HD for
storage. Of course I've tried removing it as well. I only have 16 meg
ram total now, don't remember when I added the other 8. Bad ram
possibly? I have tried swapping bank 0 and bank 1 of my simms. One
thing I have noticed, I can no longer run HyperTerminal, it immediatly
gives a page fault in unknown modual.

I know I'm starting to get more into o/s troubleshooting but any help is
appreciated.

And you're really good at it heh? :)

I think the problem has nothing to do with POV, since you
have another program (maybe more?) , hyperterminal, that
gives the same error. Personally, I find it strange that the
'module' (or something like that) is unknown... whenever
anything crashes on my computer, I get dazzled by the number
of hexvalues on my screen, specifying the error :) ... I
never figured out what they mean.

AHA!! Sounds like part of windows has been trashed. 'fraid it's probably
full re-install time, unless you can track down the errant file and restore
it from a back-up.
