Has anyone ever thought of adding spherical and cylindrical light
sources to POV? These are probably the most common shapes for lights
in the real world. It would be nice to have them built into POV.

Hello Glen knock knock,

Cylindrical is already supported -

Light Sources

LIGHT_TYPE:

spotlight | shadowless | cylinder

I think what he's looking for is a cylinder-shaped area light, like
a fluorescent tube.

You misunderstood what I meant.

And no, you can't come in... :)

Ron understands me perfectly.

I'd like to have 3-D area lights in the shapes of spheres and
cylinders, instead of being limited to 2-D area lights in the shapes
of rectangles and circles (circles are supported in Mega-POV, at
least.)

So how about it? Would this be terribly difficult to achieve?

Glen Berry

Seems that has always been one of those can-do things with the exception that it
would slow things down with all the extra rays needed to get a 3D light source.

Am I just tripping or do I remember that an area light in MP0.4 can
automatically reorient itself to be perpendicular to the ray to an
object?
This would simulate a spherical light, no?

PoD.

Maybe a way to only reorient around a specific axis? That way, you could
use a rectangular area light with the reorient feature set to the axis
of the desired cylinder. From a point within the scene, it would look
pretty close to being a cylinder, you most likely couldn't tell the
difference without the aid of a computer program to compare images.

Spherical sources can already be simulated with the existing reorient
patch and the circular area light patch.

These could also be done with high-ambient textures on illuminated
objects and MegaPOV radiosity, using the radiosity for the lighting...

AFAIK megapov has spherical area lights (faked, but you will not notice
any difference).

Um, yeah, you're right. Forgot about the 'orient' keyword.
