I was wondering if anyone has ever tried compiling a version of POV-Ray for
the PocketPC? Would it be even possible?

I've fooled around a bit with YASRT (Yet Another Set of Ray-Tracing Tools),
but it's in the early beta stages and pretty limited in what it can do right
now.

I might consider grabbing the Microsoft SDK for Pocket PC and compiling the
pov-source, but I don't know if it would be a waste of time to try at this
point.

I think it depends on your target system resources. You will need at least
four MB free memory to use POV-Ray for aynthing close to interesting (unless
you are satisfied with rendering a few spheres).

Further, you should make sure the system you target has a FPU - as most of
those systems use the ARM processor core this is not very likely...

Well, I just got my hands on Microsoft Embedded Visual C++, so I'll give it
a whirl. It might not be useful yet, but since the next-generation devices
are coming out with 64 megs of RAM, it might come in handy farther down the
road.

My current Pocket PC only has 32 megs of RAM.

Give it a few years. I have a hard time running a 160x80 mpeg video on my
cassiopeia, much less rendering something like that in a mini-pov distro for
pocketpc. Why not just get a cheap old 300mhz laptop? It would work wonders
better.....

I've looked around for a cheap laptop, but couldn't find any with the
specifications to run ZBrush. But I have the Pocket PC anyway. But anyway,
I'd give it more like a year and half. The next-next gen models will
probably have 128 megs of ram and by 2003 they're supposed to start coming
out with 3d acceleration chips (I know Pov-Ray doesn't use 3d aceleration,
it's a different kind of animal that wouldn't benefit from it).

Besides, there's the challenge involved. :)

www.yasrt.org is "Yet Another Simple Raytracer". It happens to also be
ported to the Pocket PC. I emailed the maker of YASRT (who is also a big
POV-Ray fan) and asked if he was going to continue work on it. He said yes
and also that he was going to start porting POV-Ray to the Pocket PC, but he
was going to wait until the new version of POV-Ray comes out (3.5)
officially. This is great! I use YASRT at school during class on my Pocket
PC and its faster on a Pocket PC than you might think it would be.
years.

Also, if you have difficulty running 160x80 video on you Casio, I definitely
recommend PocketDIVX at www.projectmayo.com . It can play video on even old
Casios at 24 fps or higher at over 240x180.

Thanks for the update. I've been to www.yasrt.org recently and it hasn't
been updated for a while. I had been worried that it had been abandoned.
