I always knew the Brits were eccentric, so where else could this bizarre
air accident have happened...

Would you have expected a German aircrew to behave differently?

IIRC I was on a helicopter sitting beside the door when it fell off. We
had just taken off and were at the bit there the chopper points its
noise down to pick up speed, when it happened. These things do happen.

Absolutely not... or well, maybe? There are differences in mentality
between people from different nations, and they may result in
differences in the way people react. That aircrew was a perfect match
for the accident; don't know if a German crew would have been. Also,
don't know if any crew would have been, had it not been due to the fact
that there happened to be an extra person in the cockpit on that flight.

But I wasn't alluding to competence anyway, but to, well, shall we say,
karma?

Somehow it seems fitting that such a bizarre thing (including the fact
that there were no casualties, nor even lasting injuries) should happen
not to Germans, Americans, Chinese, or whoever, but to Brits.

If karma had allowed something like this to happen to a German plane at
all, it would have required the pilot to go the extra mile out of the
cockpit and straight into the engine, to cripple the plane for good.
That would have turned this eccentric Brit-ish incident into a proper
solid German-ish tragedy.

(You know, like, German planes don't get lost. If we have a suicidal
pilot in the cockpit, the plane doesn't mysteriously disappear over some
vast ocean never to be found again; it just slams into the next best
mountain, with ample evidence available as to what happened. And of
course France is involved in some way, too.)

Training, that's what does it.
I would expect any first or second world aircrew to behave similarly.

LOL I know what you mean. "Steady at the wheel, old chap.
It's allowable to let your lower lip tremble a bit and loosen your tie,
three quarters of an inch. Any more emotion than that and we will have
to look into your background*."

Tut, tut. You're too harsh in your national stereotyping.
I think that if it had been a proper German plane. The captain would
have been hauled back in tout de suite, to sign the forms for leave of
absence. :-P
If it had been a Scottish plane. The steward would have been handing out
free whisky and selling tickets to tour the cockpit. ;-)

It was a blessing, in a way.

And it goes farther back than that. As the French say: "l'ennemi
héréditaire" :-)

I know. But Germany as a country, doesn't by much.

Or that, maybe.

On an American plane, they'd probably have let him go, and fired him for
leaving his workplace.

And in Russia the pilot would have safely landed the cockpit window,
while the rest of the plane would have fallen out of the sky like a
brick; because as we all know, in Russia you don't leave the plane - the
plane leaves you.

I guess I just need the comic relief of making some jokes about air
crashes these days. As you may know, among the GermanWings passengers
were a bunch of German school children and teachers; it so happens that
they were from the town I was born in. Not that I have any other
relation to the victims (I grew up in a different town), but still the
event seems to have gotten to me more than it would normally have. And
the fact that I know what it's like to suffer from depression
(fortunately without any suicidal tendencies) doesn't help either.

Which of those many? ;)

Heck, there have been quarrels near the Rhine as early as 2000 years ago
- the Romans didn't build the Limes for nothing :)
It seems quite a miracle we've been living peacefully alongside our
western neighbors for about 65 years now and counting.

Even so, the relationship to France is something special. When we don't
hate them, we seem to totally love them.

Or breaking the Health and safety rules.

Just remembered a story about that. When I was working offshore on an
American oil rig. A roustabout was walking across the drill deck When a
crane hook slipped its support and fell on his head. (He was okay as
there was an arresting chain which caught it as it hit him.

It wasn't counted as a lost time accident as he should not have been
there during the operation And was retrospective fired before the block
hit him.

I know what you mean. It is over forty years since I left Glasgow. But
when a bin lorry ran into some Christmas shoppers, last year. I felt
more affected than I would have thought.

I would forget all the one back to the Roman Empire. Then you managed to
win a couple of Eagles, beating Scotland 2 - 1.

And you are still going on about it. ;-)

It is brilliant, isn't it?
And some of our fruit loops want to leave Europe and bring back the Empire.

It is a North/South divide in Britain. The Scots like the French.

That's what I call an efficient way to maintain safety records.

And that's a surprise exactly how? You sporrans should count your
blessings and be thankful for the honor of even being allowed to play us :P

Whining about a 2-1 loss against us... tsk... you do remember the jig we
danced with Brazil, don't you? :)

Nah, not normally. It's the brits who keep bringing up the good old times.

As if you folks had any chance to wrest that baton back from the hands
of the USA...

The Scots have a historic reason for doing so. We Germans sure as hell
don't :) (aside maybe from the fact that they refrained from burning the
entire French zone of occupation to ashes last time around, and instead
even reached out their hand for genuine peace)

More precisely, everything East of Paris which does not speak French :-)
