If it weren't serious it would be funny.
I've read of a restaurant that was closed because their microwave had
the On/Off switch in English. Another was a report of a Chinese
Restaurant that was closed because the Chinese name, in ideograms, was
above the name in French.
I don't know if the stories are true but I read it on the BBC website.
If that helps.

It might have been the reasons given by the owners... Notice, both were
restaurants... Most usual reason to close a restaurant, by authority, is
dangerous hygiene:
* freezing unsold cooked food (to save for another day)
* using/storing out-of-date food
* fungus
* not respecting forward-walk or cold-chain
* reported and confirmed illness due to contamination
* infestation by various colonies (rodent, cockroach, ... )
But let not forget another reason: bankrupt, due to lack of customers,
flying away waiters and waitresses due to unpaid over-hours, and most
interesting: taxes.
(When you start a business, most taxes get deferred for one year or
two... even taxes on wages get collected only every three months.. so
it's easy to "forget" about them... then they come back as cumulated
amount due).
And if successful, do not forget complains (to the police with repeated
fines) of the neighbours about the sound level.
(of course, if a concurrent know well enough the mayor and the police,
it might help too)

Both of those are probably false, or gross exagerations of the actual
case, as they don't have the authority to close businesses. At best
they can fine the Chinese restaurant for not respecting the law, but
they can't force it to close.
As for the english signs on the microwave oven, I'd be very surprised
about that, since it's not the fault of the restauranteur, but of the
microwave maker.

On that topic, the provincial government instituted new rules for
restaurants and reporting sales, to cut down on tax evation, as mulitple
restaurants would "forget" to report sales paid in cash, or had modified
POS terminals that did not register all sales.
Mysteriously - by pure coincidence, I'm sure - many restaurants closed
in the weeks following this law being enacted, including very popular,
trendy restaurants.

It would not surprise me. I don't have a lot of respect for the news media.
But I've read a couple of articles on it and spoken,recently, to a
French Canadian who mentioned it too. It keeps on coming up.
I have a lot of sympathy for the French Minister of Culture. It is a
lost battle here, I am afraid. We are becoming more American in our way
of speech. "Run that by me again. In English." Is no longer funny.
Ah! Sigh.

Excellent! Since our birthdays are coming up soon, do we make that two
dates or just the one?

Better make it one. I've jumped out of the fire into the frying pan.
Talk of late nights and weekend working. :-(

Sounds sensible to me.
BTW With the way things are going, would the week after our birthdays be
acceptable? ... you choose the exact date.
