Here is an image I've been working on lately. It's not finished, something
is missing, I think. Any ideas or comments are welcome.

We say that the time passes, but it has to come from somewhere. This is
where it comes from: it is caught in such timetraps up on the mountain and
the time is reported via telephone down to the rest of sivilisation.

OK, admit it. You used crackle for the rocks. ;-)

The man looks really good. Although... the shadow on his trousers looks 
way darker than the shadow on the ground... makes him look pasted on.

Me? No, never! Well, there's a little bit of crackle in there somewhere, but
it's more complicated than that. It's also a height_field without the smooth
keyword. The lichen is the leopard pattern with a lot of turbulence.

It's a photo on a plane without shadows, and some more (invisible) planes
that cast the shadows. However, what makes the shadows the way they are,
are a lot of non-shadow-casting lightsources around the scene to provide
ambient lighting. If you look closely, you will see that all the shadows on
the horsontal planes are the same. But I take your point, I'll probably
adjust the lights in a later version.

Hehehe.  I'm partly wondering where the beanstock is.
Is that a standardized timetrap cage? Do some places have indoor timetraps
where the cage hangs? And if they can hang, should it have a way to weight
it down?

Yes, this is the standard and only kind of timetrap. It must be on top of
mountains, because that is where the time comes first (it comes from
above). I don't know how it could be possible to have them indoors, that
would be physically impossible. The hook on top is just for the initial
building of it, and for the (very rare) maintenance. The spools on the
bottom are anti-gravity devices that keep the cage-sphere in position. This
is a very reliable construction, made by the famous engineers of the past.

I don't understand why you ask, this is common knowledge, no? You shold not
make fun of such serious things. Time is important! Time is sacred!

Maybe try scaling down the crackle texture (or whatever it is) on the
stairs? Right now they seem too large to permit such perfectly smooth
edges. Alternatively, add some bumpiness to some parts of the edges
to simulate rocks that didn't quite fit in.

Also, what are those bluish-white spots on the rock in the foreground?
If they're supposed to be ice, they aren't very convincing. A real
snow-covered rock wouldn't have such splotchy patches of ice/snow;
ice tends to form in sheets and perhaps streaks (refrozen from partially
molten snow), and snow edges formed from melting wouldn't have
frozen splotches left, but rather dark patches and streaks (wet rock
from the slow trickle of water flowing down). Your current texture
looks very good from a distance, but you might want to consider
tweaking the details more carefully for the foreground rock.

Other than that, pretty good. The sky is nice.

A problem with the trap is, I believe, that time can leak out along the 
anchors as they are not insulated. So, this means that World Time is getting 
behind on Real Time on a daily basis. Not so good. I think my own watch is 
more reliable.

It looks good, I guess the guy does look a bit pasted on but I hadn't really
noticed it until Orchid XP picked up the shadow issue, it is very well done.
I think this image would look better with a bit more realistic snow, maybe
use Gilles Tran's make snow macro to position some snow on the hand rail or
possible add a little bit of ground fog..

very cool use of hex and octo shapes .... i like the treatment at the points 
on the octo shape. i also like the iron work. i'm wondering if a little 
crand might make the snow look a little less 2D.
