Sorry, I didn't read it properly!
I think some of the more abstract ones should be easy enough.

Here's my one. this is my version of XP's "radiance" image. I chose it 'cause
it's a pretty easy one. I might try a tougher one now :)

Technical info: It's just a sphere with a normal map on it. The craters are
crackle pigment with form <1,0,0>, and the other lumps are a granite pattern.
There's also a load of focal blur on there to make it look more like the
original.

Okay, I think I've done the best I can do for this now. Here's my version of
XP's "Bliss" backdrop.

Some tech info: The hill is a bicubic_patch covered with 4,000,000 blades of
grass! (a mesh of 100,000 unique ones duplicated 40 times). Lighting is using
Jaime Vives-Piqueres' lighting macros to get realistic sun light. No radiosity,
just a few shadowless lights to fake radiosity from the sky. Also no fog, the
distant mountains are tinted blue :) The clouds use a very tubulent leopard
pattern with some cunning trickery to make them look shaded, they're just flat
on the sky_sphere. The mountains are just a wrinkle pattern. I'll post the
source to p.b.s-f because there's some nice macros I think I should share :)

Render time 1h 22m at 1600x1200. I can post he full size version if anyone wants
it for their wallpaper :)

What do you think?

Now I'm curious... on what hardware?

Athlon XP 2200, 512MB ram.

Not super-fast but it's good enough for me :)

Impressive... how did you achieve the lit crater rims on the night side? Whenever
I try a bumpy sphere, I get a sharp
terminator cutting through all bump features, and the "night side" is entirely
dark!

See you in Khyberspace!

Ah, that is the shadow line artefact. You can find details in section 9.8 of
pov's docs.

For this render I used no_shadow in my object, but for more complex scenes you
can remove the artefact using SlimePOV. http://www.slimeland.com/slimepov/

Yes, I looked it up... it mainly deals with shadow line artifacts on smoothed meshes
but says not much on the bumpy sphere problem, so I just tried no_shadow... and it
looked MUCH better! The problem now is how to fake the cratered moon's shadow on the
gas giant's upper cloud deck - I think I'll try a negative cylindric light! Or
should I go completely for isosurfaces? But they render so sloooow on my poor
pre-war rattletrap...
