I was reading bout no POV on renderosity and thought I would publish this.
Completed from scratch in one week for a book cover commission. The
backgroud is Pov the trees modified XFrog magnolia trees and the figures
were posed and RENDERED in Poser! Then composited in Corel Paint.

There are issues - but this was the best I could manage in a week

I was thinking about buying a copy of poser, but it's hard to
tell if it will do what I want.  Are you saying the image above
is _not_ rendered in pov?

I'm a povray fan... I'm only hoping poser will let me put humans
in my scenes.

If I'm correct, Mick rendered the Poser people with a
alfa background in Poser, rendered the background in POV and
finally merged them in Corel Paint.

If Poser will do what you want?
Hmm.. tough question. Poser is fairly easy to use and has
a good backup with new props (stuff) as well as new
characters. The problem is that the really good ones
costs money. Have a look at daz3d and you'll know
what I mean. The interface can take a while to get used
to and when it comes to Poser 5, you'll have to have a
pretty good machine too or it will be kind of sluggish.
P5 comes with a cloth simulator and that brought with it
dynamic clothing and hair.

Nice.  Of course the figures could be improved, not rendering them in 
POV (and therefore lacking shadows etc.) surely does not help :-) but 
this is not really a point for a book cover like this and the whole 
scenery looks good.

BTW you have made several book covers before IIRC, are those always for 
the same pubisher?

Thanks,  You hit the nail on the head, the problem is one of matching
shadows and with more time and thought that would be relatively easy.
There's no way I'm going to make habit of this but it was quick.

One or two and all for the same publisher and author.

Yep, for speed and to save a lot of time converting meshes and textures not
to mention the render time! the background alone took 30 hrs

It will but it can be a long winded buisiness and expensive. I mostly create
my own maps now but for this one I bought some.

I agree that was a better image but then the brief was more unusual
This one was simple, two lovers in front of one of my landscapes!

Right.  But the dynamic hair will not export to POV-Ray.  Everything else
will, as far as I know.  You should still be able to use the older style
alpha-map hair and get it to export.

I've played around with Poser 4 (in conjunction with PoseRay and POV-Ray),
and it's not the easiest thing to deal with, but it certainly beats trying
to build a model human yourself!  Poser people tend to look better from
behind, imho.  Photorealistic faces are very difficult at best.
