Version 2

I moved the light source to the right (Note to self: Never
put the main light behind the camera unless there is a very good
reason) and added some details in the foreground.

The figure is a poser model and the clothing is a 3ds import
from http://www.stewstras.net/baument/downloads.htm

The snow on the flagpole was done with a the snow_blobs
macro (Who wrote that?)

Flag created with cloth simulator 0.4.0

I originally intended this scene for the irtc, but I don't
think I'm going to enter it.

Comments?

Gail

I think the castle looks very good. But I can suggest a few improvements.

The perspective is somehow off. The castle looks small instead of far away.
I don't know how to fix this but maybe taking a look at the scene from above
and checking the scale distances between the objects would help.

A slope map would I think improve the appearance of the mountains. The
mountains are also a little smooth.

The figure's staff is in front of a shadow and therefore hard for me to see.

Just my opinion for what it's worth.

You've really added some interest to this scene, but I only saw
the flag when I was specifically looking for it, maybe have
a bit more contrast between the flag and the rocks.

It is a slope map. What do you think is wrong?

Guess I was wrong then. I think it's just the smoothness of the mountains,
but the clean snow doesn't look to me like it's holding to the more
horizontal parts of the mountain. The ridge in front of the castle has one
area that looks definitely like a spot rather than a deposit of clean snow.
Craggier mountains would look better to me, but that's just my taste.

I'm confused. It looks like stars throughout yet I'm guessing it is snow
falling. But there's the aurora (clear sky). Since it is "ice" castle I
see it as looking through clear ice into space beyond. Really messes with
my perception.

Uuh, good point. Snow doesnt fall from a clear sky. I'll scrap the snow.

It's ice castle because the castle is made of ice.

It all looks really good, just the mountains seem quite ordinarily to me,
some more interesting shape would be good.

I'm not sure, i wrote some snow macro that uses blobs, but i never named
it snow_blobs IIRC:

I'm going to experiment with perlin noise and rmf later today.

I had a look at that, it's not the same one. The start of the macro is as
follows

#macro snow_blobs()
  #declare high_x = 0;
  #declare low_x = 100;
  #declare high_z = 0;
  #declare low_z = 100;
  #declare R_Val = 0.1;
  #declare S_Val = 1.0;
  #declare R1 = seed(123);
  #declare R2 = seed(456);
  #declare R3 = seed(789);
  #declare R4 = seed(987);
  #declare R5 = seed(654);
  #declare x_count = XStart;
