He is new to me. Thanks.
A quick google and I like his impressionist style. Subtly different from
the western style. The painting with serfs bring an image of Modest
Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina (opera) to my mind.

You could almost describe their work as "chocolate box" but it isn't.

Oh yes, absolutely. Look at "The barge haulers on the Volga" and you
will hear the song:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Song_of_the_Volga_Boatmen

I learned it from a recording by the Soviet Army Choir, back in the
sixties :-)

It isn't indeed. There is that subtle difference that separates art from
kitsch.

Now, you /really/ want me to do a genre piece!

Not that I wouldn't be tempted of course...

Which brings me to the following question: Croft houses today seem
traditionally to be painted white. Old restored ones however appear
often unpainted. My preference is for the latter in this scene, or I
could do a mix.

What do you think?

From what I remember, in general crofters' cottages would normally be
left unpainted. If you think about it, to paint a cottage would require
that you first plaster the outer walls - a waste of resources and
energy. Only the rich would be able to afford it.

Makes sense. I think that the present day trend is of a recent date and
has more to do with tourism, wealthy owners, and such, than with
historically accurate interpretations.

I'll write that in my diary.
Today on the 25th of April. Dr John made sense.

An other thing about crofts. They were often sunk into the ground. By
that I mean the floor level would be a few feet below the ground level.
This reduced the height and exposure to the weather.

Dr John makes sense all the time. Your inability to follow his
high-level arguments is not his problem ;-)
(another Glenmorangie? this includes you as well, Thomas; not the reply,
the offer of a reasonable whisky)

...also, notice the net and the stones used to hold the thatch down.

Kilchoman should serve better here.

The image is developing very fine. I guess Thomas will still add molehills to
the greens.

Best regards,
Michael

True you have bigger problems than that.
Me and my brothers use m/c code.

Unfortunately, Stephen does not enjoy the subtlety of the Islay
whiskies, hence I offered him something more suited to his undeveloped
palate.
BTW I haven't tasted Kilchoman yet, but I look forward to tracking it
down and trying it.
