Well, they do - as can be seen on the closer lamps. The direct 
illumination from the candles inside is a good deal stronger though than 
the indirect one from the colored lanterns, so there's not much of a 
difference. And on the far-away water, specular reflection strongly 
dominates, so we don't see the water being illuminated.

Yes, as far as realism goes, you're certainly right, as I deliberately 
"tuned" the moon to get a stronger contrast with the lanterns' colors.

(Then again, in reality the observer's eyes would probably adapt a good 
deal to the lanterns' colors, causing the impression of a rather blueish 
moon.)

Another thing that's deliberately unrealistic is the moon's size - it's 
about 5 times larger than it would be in reality.

I have to confess I didn't actually recognize it as the moon
before reading your post. Apart from the size and the color,
this may also be because the view is so crisp and I've never
been to a place where the environment gets so dark (and
with full moonshine at that). Maybe add a bit of halo?
