Thanks to Chris Bartlett for a really cool envelope macro (I'll make
better use of it in the next image, I promise!).

I modeled a ballpoint pen with user-supplied text on the side, and that
chrome pen holder.

Just in case you haven't seen my posts in p.o-c (and don't want to look
there for them), I'm trying to assemble a group of office related
objects to upload to the object collection as a single contribution.
Anyone who wishes may donate objects. The point is to have a variety of
objects that are a relatively high quality (no point in putting in
something that can be modeled in 5 minutes...), but are flexible enough
to fit a variety of scenes.

So, please help me decorate! :)

There is a point actually. I could post a quick-n-dirty model that I did
in 5 minutes. Other people could use it as a base to make it more
complex, detailed, and flexible. If individuals post complete and
finished models only, it's not as much of a community effort...

(follow-up to p.o-c, if I got it right)

Good point, but only for a WIP collection.

I don't want this to become a collection of half-baked models; I want
them to be

a) High quality, ready to use in a final scene
b) Flexible, so they'll fit a variety of needs

Maybe, if you have a wip you don't want to continue, post it in p.b.i
separately, and see if anyone wants to continue it?

Having organized several things like this in my career, I'll suggest
that it would be useful to allow "half-baked models", along with a
rating system as to quality, complexity, customizability, etc. Usually
just a 1-5 quality rating will do. This lets people looking for *any*
model of a giraffe (say) find something to at least start with...

Yes, but that's why we have the object collection. I'm trying to put
together a single package within that collection.

If you have a 'half baked model', by all means upload it to
lib.povray.org on its own, and I'll be more than happy to look at it.

Hi Darren,

I think this is something slightly different.

The http://lib.povray.org web site does support non-standard submissions.
You can rate your contribution (1-3) and indicate that it's doesn't comply
with the standards. By default the search won't display such objects, but
there is an option on the search screen to display non-compliant objects
(just below the keywords box).

Once an item has been submitted, anyone (anyone who's bothered to register)
can provide feedback on quality, complexity, compliance etc. with both free
text fields and numeric ratings.

Ben is attempting to put together a cluster of high quality objects for
submission to the collection. Anyone who wants to promote the development of
the collection in other ways is also welcome to do so and, IMO will also be
doing the community a service.

Regards,
Chris B.

Cool. Sorry. I misunderstood. :-)

Hi,

There are some pencils and a pen pot on the Povobjects site. See the
link below:

http://objects.povworld.org/cgi-bin/search.cgi?X=pencil

Does lib.povray.org now have all the objects that are on the povobjects
site? Or is it a case of contacting the original authors and getting
them to re-submit their objects so that they're covered under LGPL?

It would be great to see a browseable objects package included as part
of the standard POV install.

Bye for now

Harvesting object from any sites with a more restrictive licenses (or where
no license is given, in which case copyright remains with the original
author) would need consent from the original author. This would either mean
that the original author would need to re-submit to lib.povray.org so that
their objects can be distributed under the CC-LGPL, or, it's also possible
for someone else to do the actual submission with appropriate consent from
the author.

It's possible that some existing objects from other locations have licenses
that permit re-distribution under the CC-LGPL without requiring additional
consent from the original author, in which case, anyone willing to put in a
little time could do it.

I'd very much like to see that too. The motivation behind the creation of
this object collection (http://lib.povray.org/) was to build a set of
objects that can be used together, under a common license that enables (and
indeed encourages) future modification and redistribution. The basic naming
standards that we've adopted are intended to enable the objects to be added
into a single directory and used individually or in combination without
conflicting with one another.

Chris Cason has announced the intention to move POV-Ray V4 over to the GPL
license. There's nothing stopping us (or anyone else for that matter)
creating a download of the whole object collection right now. It should
therefore be possible in the future to distribute POV-Ray V4, along with the
entire object collection as well as open source modellers, sets of utilities
and other supporting software as a bundle. Indeed, I think it was suggested
that it could even be built into open source operating system distribution
packages.

The first step of course will be to build the object collection up to a
critical mass. We need to get enough interesting objects to make it the
place of reference when people are looking for POV-Ray objects or when
they're looking for a place to share their own objects.

There are lots of ways of contributing to this effort. It would be great if
someone would be willing to reach out to contributors to other collections
and invest a little time to build this collection in that way. I can imagine
that many of the original authors would be very pleased to see their work
take on a new life.

Regards,
Chris B.
