Looks nice, the style is similar to the 'air-motorcycle' you showed some
time ago. I am quite surprised that the media does not cause any
trouble - i often get artefacts in such a case if i don't choose very
high quality (and slow) settings.

There is quite a strong contrast between the ancient buildings (no
metal, glass etc.) and the futuristic vehicles.

I was about to say the same. I found myself looking for Leeloo there. :-)
Jaw-dropping beautiful. But that's Gilles Tran's, so that's kinda expected.

Wow!
I've seen a small WIP of your image some months before with a Mini Cooper
with two jet engines instead of wheels.
In addition I'm a fan of "Valerian and Laureline" comics. Volume 16 were the
antetype for the design of the "5th Element" movie IIRC
(http://eniubo.free.fr/valerian/albums/cercpouv2.jpg).
So you treated me very much especially with this image.

Yep, that one was a detail from the original picture. In fact the demo
reuses most of the elements of this one, with a different camera and less
objects (and no 3rd party ones of course).

Actually the flying things have a no_shadow to avoid artefacts. Also, in
tests I did last year with this series of images, some media effects did
cause a lot of trouble in some cases. Getting the effect right took indeed a
lot of time, and the current setup has its own limitations... but it works

Oh well where I live we have also futuristic vehicles and decrepit
buildings, and the original pic has a Mini Cooper ;-)
If you look at the code you'll see that the cars and buildings have a number
(3, 4 etc.) which simply mirrors my learning of Wings3d in the course of a
few weeks last summer. The last models are more "imaginative" and complex
than the first ones. In fact, the first models are only good as fillers and
background elements.

Hi Gilles,
another question:
why you use "assumed_gamma = 1;" when you actually use a value of 2.2 or so?
This was also true for each of your excellent example images for your
Maklecloud macro.

I'm working on a laptop and I found after much trouble that the only
combination of display_gamma/assumed_gamma that worked on it was 1/1 (i.e.
the images created on the laptop aren't too dark on the CRTs I also use). It
also seems easier to tweak the lighting with these settings.
To be honest, after reading the docs over and over and reading many
discussions in these groups, I'm still unable to understand what are the
"right" gamma settings for a given computer, and the fact that the gamma
test doesn't seem to work on flat screens adds to my confusion :(

Well I've been brought up with Valerian comics, and also with the drawings
of Moebius, so a good deal of my visual sci-fi reference comes from them.
The 5th Element was a fanboy dream come true, as it put on screen what most
of us lovers of French sci-fi comics had taken for granted for the past 20
years but couldn't really find in US-made sci-fi movies (Blader Runner being
the exception).
Actually, the comic strip that started it all is a short story from 1976 by
Moebius and Dan O'Bannon (of Alien fame), "The Long Tomorrow", which defined
the reference frame for good number of urban sci-fi stories, comics and
movies, from Blade Runner to cyberpunk. Both Ridley Scott and William Gibson
have acknowledged the influence of these 16 pages in their own work.

I guess that one reason this comic isn't more famous is that it's quite
no-holds-barred about violence and pornography... O'Bannon was supposed to
turn it into a TV show some years ago but if it was done now it would seem

Hmm? You're supposed to use assumed_gamma 1 for new scenes...it only
exists to provide a way to correctly render scenes designed without
gamma correction.

assumed_gamma should be 1 for new scenes. Display_Gamma should be the
gamma of the display your image will be viewed on. LCD displays have an
S-shaped response curve, the power curve used to approximate the
response of CRT displays doesn't work well at all on them, but I think
the system usually maps it to either a CRT response curve or a linear
(gamma 1) function. I don't have any technical references for this, it
just seems to match the behavior I've seen.
The gamma actually used to correct things is Display_Gamma/assumed_gamma.
If assumed_gamma is 1, that is just Display_Gamma, otherwise it corrects
the colors for a scene designed on a machine with a display gamma of
assumed_gamma, but without any gamma correction. Maybe this will make it
clearer:
Say you make a scene on a machine with gamma of G1. When you do this,
the version of POV you use doesn't support gamma correction, so you just
choose the colors to look right, essentially encoding the gamma into the
scene itself.
Years later, you dig up the scene in some archives and render it. It was
designed for a display with a different gamma, and doesn't turn out
right, so you add an assumed_gamma statement with the gamma of your old
machine. The scene now renders correctly.
New scenes should just use assumed_gamma 1, to use the display gamma of
the machine the scene is being rendered on.
