Great scene, Mick!

The plant placement looks very good although it seems some grass is
growing straight out of solid rock...

The colors look very nice but the lighting of the clouds seem to come
from a completely different direction than that of the ground.

I'm planning to, one of the reasons this took so long to do
is that I wanted to make sure it held up when rendered at a large size

Always a problem - but writing a collison routine would be too hard for me.

Well spotted :-) I agonised over this but in the end decided I wanted the
light on the rocks.

My first impression was also that: the lighting is unfortunately
not consistent with the sunset sky (so late evening, sun on the bottom-
left corner outside the image) and the vertical light on the foreground
(so around noon) which should therefore be made darker, more reddish,
and much less contrasted.
Lighting is at least as important as the amazing amount of details
in your scene to make it look "real" -- if you eventually seek for photo-
reality. All the rest is damn good :-)

I'm not really bothered about photo reality - sometimes you just cannot say
what you need to say and be totally realistic. For me the mood, atmosphere,
whatever you wish to call it, is more important. The lighting though not
real is, believe me, important to make the picture work. I'll take any flack
you wish to throw at me on that - as long as people react to the
mood/feeling of the picture I'm happy.

I agree with you: afterall it's your creation. It doesn't have to
look real. But the "subject" is so well done (although there is no real
subject in your image) that it would maybe deserve at least one version
where you match both foreground and background lighting.
For now your efforts result in something like a fake compositing.
Sadly this destroys my good mood about this image...

Only my 2 cents of course,

Wow - very nice. Reminds me of a place in my local area my parents used to
take me when I was a kid - known as Toads Mouth - so called because the rock
looks like a toad. Heres the only (and not very good) picture on the whole
of the internet I can find

My first thought was that I hoped you would. Enchanting work. Now I have
another hike to add to the list :D
