I think I'll use this thing in the background, partially hidden by ferns.
For the foreground ( closeup ) I'll have to uas a different approach. Not
shure yet what to use best.

Very nice. How many blobs?
Your plant was such an impressive mesh. I wonder why you didn't make a mesh
log, as it would render so much faster. I wish I could afford to buy a fast
computer for every very talented person who doesn't have one.

Good idea, but surely very slow when ready.

Using a blob for that seems an interesting idea, for the radial cracks
that looks very good, but the concentric ones are not curved which looks
unrealistic.

Nice that you like it. As it turnes out I have to do all my scenes as a
single mesh to make rendering fast enough *lol*
I think I'll have to use a mesh again. The blob stuff is really slow.

So I just have to become a very talented person and...voila I'd get a new
PC. :-)

*g* I can't see a difference. Every scene takes endless.... so what is
longer? Endless or even more endless? .-)

I know. I made them shorted but more of them along the radius. It looks
better but is even slower since it multiplies the number of blob elements.

That's usually how it works anyway. When a person spends as much time with
PoV as you obdviously have, a fast PC moves up close to the top of the
priority list. If a person can find $35 a week for cigarettes, another can
find $35 a week for a computer.

Also, I would consider you very talented already.

Huh, I wish this would be the case. In fact I have only few hours a week
time for PoV. More than the half of this time the PC is busy with rendering
*g* (although you are right: I was already a user of the very first DOS
versions, running on a 486Dx2/66Mhz).
Luckily most of the things I had in my mind worked fine on the first attempt
(or almost) and I got some extra, unforseen spare time last week. I used it
to enjoy PoV.

No doubt. (I don't smoke BTW). It is not a matter of money. I could efford a
new PC easily but I don't think that it makes sense. 99% of the time this
new computer would stand around turned off. Additionally I would consume
most of the time I have to set it up properly, get all the stuff running I'd
like to have (since I am used to it in the current environment) and I would
have even less time for PoV.

Unbelievable, a Pover who fears his Computer won't get enough work...  

Really, none of the scenes i saw from you seems to be really slow although
it might render quite long on your machine.  

I think the average render time of scenes has probably not decreased since
the beginning of POV.

Indeed!
If I had a scene which takes ages to render but looks great when finished,
I'd let the PC run for days and enjoy the result. Unfortunately I
concentrate more on programming and modelling so it has only something to
work on if  >I< do something.....

How do you *see* the render time?
Just kidding. You mean because I don't use halo, media, refraction or
complex interiors? Just wait... this will come some day.... when the fern
and all it's "collegues" are finished. At this point they all come together
and I hope the scene will look realistic and bloody complex in detail.
Approx. in 5 years. *g*

No. IMO it is quite constant... the faster the CPU gets the more complex
primitives are available in POV :-)
