Thanks for the kind comments
I agree with comments about lighting, the fog seems to kill it. The
mountains are in sunlight the ground slightly blurred by a low mist - a
common sight in British mountains, from which I draw much of my inspiration.
I will have to play some more. All the objects are placed randomly, more or
less, some are placed according to height, some according to a pigment
pattern and some according to an image map.
I will place some objects strategically by hand but only at the last.
The water has given me nothing but problems - radiosity seems to make
colours very unpredictable, which can be very exciting when something
unexpected happens but irritating when you can control it.
The image has a Tolkeinish air but I don't really want to go down that road,
I'll keep thinking.
Thanks all
Mick

Very nice,
the water seems to lack reflection and the mountains need some more work
IMO, but the foreground, esp. grass and stones look great.
I have something in work for the next IRTC as well, but it somehow still
lacks being on-topic. You seem to have the same problem to some extent,
but it already looks quite 'mystic'.

If you want you can use this world I describe here.

Personally, I think it's from the "painted" look - it looks so much
like a painting, its hard to tell its raytraced (that could be a
good or a bad thing :) As someone pointed out, some shadows could
help, but overall its an excellent image :)

I love the shapes of the rocks, and the only bad thing I could say about it is
it looks very dry and dusty for a place with so much snow and vegetation around.

That it looks like a painting is quite an achievement, IMO!

Looks nice. It looks very much like a painting, especially the
background elements. The mountains are not particularly "realistic",
but they have that traditional Japanese art look and it blends very well
into your scene IMO.

I agree, it is quite an accomplishment. Whether its good or bad
depends on what the author was trying to achieve, though :) What
would happen if he were trying to make it photorealistic, and I
told him he had made an excellent representation of a painting? :)
