In Spain I don't think I've seen anywhere that didn't have a marbel floor.
I agree with you on the other textures.

Higher max trace, for the sky? You could have rerendered that part and
pasted it in.
Wow. You've gone mad to do this for a short story class.

I would try it without the fill light, radiosity has not so much effect
right now. There should be much higher contrast between outside and
inside, unless there is a very large window behind the camera of course.
In any case for example the gab between the two cabinets should be very
dark, the (shadowless) fill light avoids this right now.

No, but with the fill light you don't see much of it.

What I find odd is that it is not tiled, but one big piece, which makes it
look extremely heavy and solid. Considering that this room is up at some
high level in a building (look out of the windows), it looks a bit strange
to me. But that may just be me...

Oopsie. Let's hope the professor doesn't notice. ;)

But if I dispense with the fill-light it's very very dark inside...

:( I'll see what I can do.

Maybe it was just a model he made and it inspired Eiffel...?!

That's what you have to expect, the contrast should be fairly high. You
can try to increase the sun light intensity and maybe make the objects
inside brighter. The directly lit parts near the windows should be nearly
white like on a well-balanced photograph. Also note that you probably have
to use recursion_limit 2 or larger to get sufficient lighting.

I answered without looking at the image, yes a whole slab would be strange.
