Hi everybody. I tried to send this earlier, but I don't think it went
through, so my humblest apologies if I posted this twice. I trying to
revamp my web site right now with some POV-Ray graphics that would make the
menus look like rusted metal. I want some feedback on my textures. Thanks

Oh boy! I love rusty metal textures! The texture of the gear is really good.
My one small suggestion would be to give the lighter brown areas a little
bit of granite normal. Rust probably wouldn't be that smooth and shiny. What
I think I like best about that texture is the stairstep effect. It's very
realistic. Are you planning to post the source for that texture (I hope)???

Regards,
Dave

Uh oh... Now I feel bad. I think I was misleading. In the effort to make
my web site look as nice as possible I (*gasp*) used an image map. I did
make the textures myself however. The stairstep effect that you liked so
much is the result of converting the texture to grayscale and running a
median filter (Irfanview) on it several times. I could send you the TGA's
if you would still like to see them, but I don't think it would have the
same effect. Sorry.

Hey, don't feel bad! - Whatever technique you use to achieve your desired
result is as good as any other if it works! You've inspired me to see if I
can duplicate that stairstep effect procedurally, though. I've never tried
any normal commands other than the basics, so maybe I'll learn something
new.

Dave

The gear looks quite good, just the finish is quite too shiny. You
probably know that the shape of it's teeth is quite wrong :-)

The text stuff looks good too, but the letters are too black so their 3d
shape is not very visible. Maybe add some reflection and a background
behind the camera.

The stair-step look on the gear is neat, suggests some kind of corrosion
process. But I'd say that your rust is too smooth and shiny looking, and
I can't help but wonder what this yellowish metal is supposed to be.
I've never seen rust on gold... ^_-

The screw heads are much too shiny, they should be dull and rough
looking. Right now they look like some kind of polished rock...simply
removing the highlights will help a lot. Also, they seem to be
glowing...try lowering the ambient value.
The background makes me think of sandstone more than anything else...put
some non-corroded metal in there, instead of the yellow stuff. A dull
blueish-gray, like iron or steel.

I was only able to view nameplate.jpg, gear.jpg resisted all my efforts
to decode it.

Okay, as for the shape of the gear, I was trying to copy a picture I found
on Corbis. The picture that I used to make the texture for the nameplate
also came from Corbis. I've posted my "inspiration pictures" for these at
http://students.oc.edu/stephen.bell/gear.jpg and
http://students.oc.edu/stephen.bell/rustedpaint.jpg That should help you
see where I'm coming from. I will try to make the sunken in parts of the
gear more rough (material map? I'll have to figure it out). Thanks for
your help.

Great work, but I think it is too shiny and the bumps are too smooth.
Rust should be extremely intricate, even flaky.

At the risk of deeply offending someone: --

That was over 1 Meg worth of rust examples there thank you.

I saved the largest of the files you posted as a jpg and got
it down to 24K with no noticeable difference, the original
was 336K.

Some of us don't read on line because we have to pay by the
minute, and don't get a chance to say weather or not we want
to receive a particular post (because that would just take
extra minutes).

I'm sure some people who havn't retrieved their news today would
be helped if you could cancel your original two posts that contained
the large files and replace those posts with new ones using smaller
jpeg files rhather than png. It's not the image format that I object
to, it's the file size.
