    That's next, but it think I will use lights.

    Plus I need a thousand details. Like the rest of the door and the Brick
Wall macro... This is what may never get done, I can't seem to do that kind
of work unless I have hours at a stretch. Usually I have only a few minutes
at a time. I have that often during the day, but rarely a whole hour at
once.

I agree with Andy though, even if it is a shadow it doesn't help the realism
any. I think it would be better if you had the lights fade out instead of end
in a shard circle. Perhaps increase the falloff rate, or make them into area
lights.

    Well I agree too. Maybe it will be as simple as moving the ring up a
small amount.

The problem may also be that the lights here are pointlights.

Imaginative... Kind of a Outer Limits type thing I thought.
No one mentioned the fluorescent light sharp shadows.  Area lights all around would be
the answer I'd think.

    I tried that. Maybe there is a way to get area lights to light up a
bigger area? It made the FL. fixture cast light only on one point of the
ceiling and walls. I ended up with a line of lights all the way down the
fluorescent tubes. I tried giving them a little random xy movement but that
just made banding. Maybe I should try both point lights and area lights, but
that still might make a very bright point in the center of the fixture.

    I also tried area lights in the emergency lights. Until I got very small
ones I couldn't get the grain out of the shadows. Then the line came back.
Maybe the cage should be shadowless?

    I did try radiosity. I would have to start over and I don't think glows
work very well, or at least how I expect them to work, with radiosity. Maybe
I will try again.

Know what you mean by radiosity and glows.  Take a look at this ugly beauty I attached
here.  It ain't workin'!
Note I labeled it "betterrad", well you ought to have seen the worse one.

Depends on what you mean...you can use an object with a high ambient 
texture to do it, or you can use a grid of light_sources. If you mean 
having area lights be calculated for all illumination instead of just 
shadows, that would probably be nearly as slow as using a grid of many 
individual lights, though a bit easier on the memory. It isn't a bad 
idea, just hasn't ever really been needed...

"Ugly beauty"...
Well, this is probably happening because glows can get extremely bright 
toward the center...sometimes radiosity will send out a sample that 
happens to make a near miss, and the extreme brightness throws off the 
radiosity calculation, making a "splotch". I have been thinking of a 
"max_brightness" keyword to fix this...

correctly it was put there exactly for this kind of problem...
