Take 2 of Into the Abyss. I've done quite a bit on the pic, but my last
overnight render was really awful (I turned down the AA settings for speed
reasons and the pic came out ugly), so this is just a testing pic of the new
settings for the Mist and Stone (added a 'wetness' sheen to the lower
stonework) I'll hopefully post a full pic tomorrow, but for now, enjoy!

Ok, Changed my mind. Here's the ugly version of the picture. The rad
settings and the AA settings are bad, not to mention the really ugly way the
moss came out, but take a look anyway.

I think it needs more contrast. All the stones are practically the same
brightness. I don't know if you can do it depending on the method you used to
make the stones, but it would be real cool if they varied a bit in color.

Hi Geoff
Looks very nice, I actually like the moss texture. as David said, the stones
need some more colour variation which will improve the picture a lot. I like
the mist at the bottom although I hope you will make it clear as to why it
is so bright.

It's not that ugly :)
The whole scene's a bit dark and it could use more details, but it looks
more finished than the image I'm working on at the mo (which I won't post
until it's a bit closer to completion).
I must admit I quite like the moss...

You're on the right track with the moss - a little more yellow in some
places and a some black in others will make it look more realistic. I really
like how there's a lot of moss at the bottom of the walls and it gradually
diminishes higher up. Good job!
In my humble opinion, the original fog was better. The main reason, I think,
is because now the ground is visible, which destroys the mood of mystery.
Now it's just an ordinary castle sitting on the ground, whereas before you
could imagine that it was on the precipice of an abyss, or magically
levitating, or something.

Maybe add a brown stain underneath the gutter.
Getting back the old mist would be nice :)

Oh, the moss is staying, just not quite so much of it. It's also a little
too black IMO. I want it to be moss, not mildew. ;)

Would you believe that every stone has it's own texture, based upon size,
location and a few random numbers? In some of my test shots, I colored them
primary colors so I could see where stones were placed. Having the castle
in bright rainbow shades was... interesting.

In that respect, yeah, but most of the reason for that was there was too
much light, which washed out the lower segments. When I turned down the
light, a lot became visible that wasn't before. I've been working on a
variant fog that's some where in between, that has the lowered brightness,
but higher opacity.
Of course, right now (thanks to high extinction values) it's coming out
dark blue, but you can't have everything. :/
