What sort of shadow/effect should the flame throw on the cup? (WIP4IRTC)

A sort-of grey-scale wibble-wobble?

I'm not sure if I'd call it a "shadow" but I think it should only cast some
turblenced ait ...

I, personally would try to give the media-container a (maybe bozo) bumpmap,
(small bumps, large scale), give the object an IOR and trace with photons
... (maybe faked caustics are enough for the effect) ...
this SHOULD fake the way light goes through the flame, and the shadow should
look good ... but the flame ???
Since we've not yet something like variable-(media-)IOR there is no way to
do this physically correct ...

Is container of the flame an ISO ???

Not sure, but it looks like your flame is a little...tall? Maybe?
Whenever I've fired up a bunsen, a pure blue flame never seemed to get
much higher than 2-1/2"

I dunno. Maybe its the camera angle.

my 2 cents : )

It should cast a slight shadow (use filter for the media container,
not transmit), and make some turbulence in the visible bacckground
(you can achieve that effect with Chris Huff's MP+)

I think someone in the group doing high-school science should be kind enough
to conduct a little experiment for Tom.... As for me, I believe there would
be no shadow of the flame (certainly not a purple shadow) just the shadow of
turbulated air (but no suggestions on how to do that sorry).

I haven't checked but I don't see how a flame could have a shadow other than the
turbulated air. Fire is just energy, no? Well, the stuff burning/smoke, but in
this case just clean-burning gas and oxygen so no noticeable shadow from that.

As for the flame itself, I think if you have a real good one going there should
be a more definite, more saturated inner cone/parabola with a thin aura around
it, but depending upon what's behind it it can show up very well or almost not
at all. (And man did we have a hot one going on Wednesday!)

Many thanks for the help, all. I've got a pretty good idea of what to do
now. I'm going to use a second media-sphere to contain the
turbulence-casting media. The current flame uses "no_shadow", the shadow
will use - ah, whatever the keyword is for invisible objects. This should
allow me to adjust the two effects independantly, I hope (dunno if this is a
good idea, but if so I offer it as a top-tip).

The flame is probably a bit tall - it's been 20 years since I was very near
a lab (or at least one with a lit bunsen).

You can? Which feature are you thinking of?
(lets see...displace warp: nope. particle_system: no. vwarp(): no.
glows: no. Any other features I added...still nothing that I can think
of using to simulate variable ior due to heat "turbulence".)
