With the official release of POV-Ray v3.0 was an example scene file
from Dan Farmer illustrating the new atmosphere feature. The scene
file is called "Matches". When the POV-Team dropped the atmosphere
feature in favor of the media feature in POV-Ray v3.1 they had to
discontinue distributing that file because it was not compatible.

With the addition of the method 3 media in MegaPov I thought I would
see if I could revive that long lost file and below you will find the
results of my efforts. While there are some very minor differences I
am for the most part satisfied with results. The surprising part was
how little time it took me to modify the scene to work with media. I
would say my development time was not much more than about 45 min. and
most of that was time spent in the render -> evaluate cycles.

Render time 3 hrs. 640x480 aa 0.3 on a 200 Mhz pentium

I don't have the render stats for the atmoshphere version but it was
at least as long if not longer.

MatchesA.jpg = with Atmosphere
MathcesM.jpg = with Media Method 3

Interesting.
Can you explain the difference in the "shadow" caused by the left-most match,
in each system? In the Atmosphere, it looks as is light travels in curves, and
in the media it makes the thing look a bit fake.

Hm, the picture with the media has a shadow in the flame... If that
could be made go away it'd look the same for me.

I like the atmosphere one better, but it may just be a matter of tweaking.

Lighting is dimmed or something in the media version, those missing sections in
the flame don't look right. It is a smooth flame though compared. I see that
there were 17 lights used in that for the flame, I had thought that was using
'halo'. I know everyone keeps saying you don't need to specify more than
'intervals 1' but I've seen it can help anyhow if it's increased.

I gave this a try too. At first I couldn't get any of the media to show up but
when it did it looked okay. So from there I figured what it needed for the
flames lighting to show up better on the neighboring matches was to use
radiosity.
You might want to do a correct aspect ratio render Ken. It makes a big
difference as you will see here, I made this 270 width by 300 height for the 9
by 10 ratio suggested in the scene file. The media was:
  media {
    method 3
    intervals 3
    samples 3,3
absorption <.15,.1,.05>*.025
    scattering {1,rgb 0.234 extinction 0.0133}
}

Under 16 minutes to render with +QR +a0.25 +r2 +am2 on a PIII 500MHz
