First off, let me just say that I am shocked. Just two days ago, Gregoire
Millette posted in .general about his commitment to making a replacement for
our beloved Twysted.net, which has failed to resurface into its previous
glory. Greg offered his computer, his capital, and his time to making a new
site, called PlanetPOV. What surprised me was that he was ignored
completely. I expected a big reaction to his post, but there was none. It
seems I am the only one interested in this.

I've already exchanged a few e-mails with him. He seems enthusiastic and
serious about this. Why don't we all get together and help him? It would be
great if we could pool all those POV resources out there into one common
site, like in the good old days of Twysted.net. I'm giving my full support
to Greg's project, and I suggest you do too. I begin by officially
submitting the very first logo to the "PlanetPOV Logo Competition". I used
MegaPOV 0.3 (mainly to speed up the media), but this can be done with
Official POV 3.1g. I also used Photoshop for the text next to the logo. Let
me know if you have any suggestions for improvements. Thank you.

For my own part it is not that I am not interested but I worry that it
will a be a duplication of a work in progress by the TAG. We have a lot
of plans for a TAG related site at povray.org that is going to contain
many of the features previously avialable at twysted.net. It's going to
take a while to get it organized but it will happen this year. It is
for that reason I did not speak up and endorse Gregoire's idea and I
suspect that the other TAG members have kept quite for similar reasons.

We have already obtained permission from the POV-Team to make these
resources available at povray.org and have been promised more resources
as needed. With this in mind I am sure that you can see that where
Twyst had mentioned that he was going to add these resources to
povray.org and failed to follow through the TAG has every intention
of succeeding in this endeavor and even now we are actively working
in the background to ensure that is does. We hope to have the Texture
Library online by sometime early next month and we should have the
TAG home page online shortly thereafter. Once we get that done I
hope to have an Iso Surface Library and a Macro Library online by
mid March to early April maybe sooner.

An example TAG sitemap (still under discussion):

THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU SAY SOMETHING SOONER?!!! You could have saved Greg and
me a couple hours of work, graphics on my side, web pages on his. >:(

I did a month ago in the Texture Library thread in .general when responding
to peoples replies to my survey and I was equaly surprised that no one
responded in favor of it at the time.

I don't think Greg should give up on this just right now. It's a pity he
didn't know about the TAG-initiative (I still hear Tony shouting in the
background, though he's at the other end of the globe ;)) but that
doesn't mean his input will not be appreciated by other POV-users.
I liked the name for a start.
I like the logo as well, although it states the obvious 8)
I just think the text should be a bit more readable around the planet.
At the sides of the orbit it's just a blur. The colours are nice.

Oops... I kinda ignored that thread. Sorry. Had I read about it, you would
have had me working on it long ago. :)

Why not? He started making something on his own, and it turns up the idea
was already taken (this happens to me a lot, I'm not surprised it happened
yet again). Were I him, I would immediately stop the presses and go contact
the TAG and see what I can do.

Heheh, I'm a little bit embarrassed now. I was supposed to have noticed this
in an old thread. I skip a lot of the material here for lack of time to read
it all.

But Ken said it would be tag.povray.org, where good does "Planet POV" fit in
here?

I was going for that you-can-infer-the-title-from-the-logo kinda thing.

Thanks. I know about the blur. It's that darn media. I accumulates as it
gets thicker and isn't very visible in thinner areas. Perhaps I should just
use green colored text with no interior. It would render faster.

We already have a shell of a Texture Library written meaning we have
graphics done, links in place, and a suitable search engine online.
We are a bit bogged down on server side scripting issues for automatic
texture submissions, texture review/acceptance, and site updating.
Once we get these issues resolved on our side, and get them compatible
with the server system at povray.org, you should see us online soon.

Our fingers are crossed anyway :)

In response to some questions from Jeff Lee I replied with some of
the following. At the time is was a little indefinite but with my
persuasive personality I pushed them past the other TAG members
and the POV-Team in short order:

> On the other hand, if there was a large selection of various media
> effects available, I'd certainly use them. (I *still* can't figure
> out how to get media to do some of the things I used to do with halos...)

I will pass this idea on to the TAG. Media is a tricky one because it
is difficult to apply to different objects and in different lighting
conditions. What it was designed for may not work when you apply it
to your own object or scene. The catch 22 here is that media in
containers require objects and we don't want this particular library
to become an object library.

For those who might be interested we have begun talking amongst
ourselves about adding other resources like this one to povray.org.
We have not yet decided what we will offer or even obtained permission
from the POV-Team to offer any more than the texture library but we
will be working on it after the new texture library goes on line.

Some ideas I personaly have had are:

Texture Library
Object Library
Macro Library
Isosurface Library
Turorial Library
Document Library

We might offer these resources from a web page that we will call the
TAG home page. Then the seperate libraries will be accessed from there.
Again we have nothing concrete on this yet and even if we do add these
it will be in stages as we get time and permission to work on them.

If I were to choose...

(which, luckily, I'm not)
