I tried Jpeg, but it lost too much quality.  Some of the smaller ships
became smudges...

Actually I do ;-]
This image does an incredible job of expressing both SIZE and s p a c e. How
did you make the smoke clouds? I spent quite a while studying your image,
getting a feel for all that's in it and trying to catch all the details -
wow! a lot of time and imagination must have gone into that; Good Job. I
have one comment and one suggestion:
That highlight on the metalic band of the station's dome - is there any way
you can break it up? It's hard to believe that something that size would
have an undisturbed band of metal all around it, like it was cast from a
single mold. Rather, I think it would be many panels - which would then
disturb a clean highlight.
The other thing - There is so much going on here it seems that it would be
easy to extract a story out of it. Maybe a gallery website that tells the
story, supported with a series of images based on the station and the
world(s) and people(s) involved?
Well, that's my change for a nickle ;-]

Those spacecrafts are scattered pretty chaoticly.
It took me a while to see any structure to them, aparently more detailed
than when first seen. In fact I first thought they were explosion debri
pieces. I got real close to the monitor and saw there is a fractal-like
pattern on them as well as the usual cockpit window and wings. These old
eyes aren't up to scrutinizing things on-screen. I wear glasses (since
high school) and never wear them indoors out of habit (you wouldn't
believe how bad TV looks to me, just last night I wore glasses and
realized everyone on TV has eyes. I'm dumb, I know...). So I can't see
perfectly well from as little as only 2 or 3 feet, my seat distance from
this monitor.
Looks like you have a ocean jellyfish type space station, if I were you
I'd lose the image_map for that dome part, or at least make it a
bump_map. But then I'm not you, am I? It just looks way to flat to me.

Thanks for the critique.   As for size, I did that with SIZE. 
That planet has a raduis of 1e6, and that space station is 1000 high. 
The small ships are about 5 units long.
<p>There is no smoke, I think that effect is being created by radiosity.
<p>Metal Band - Actually they ARE small panels.  I placed randomly
tall boxes every 1 degree hanging from the base of  "half dome". 
They are the standard "Brushed_Aluminum" texture.  I intended to have
them play some of the light from the 'bays' in the lower section back on
to the station via radiosity, but they just don't.
<p>Story: There is a story... Its about a pilot who wakes up from cryo
sleep after 3 months flight to find the outpost he is approaching has been
destroyed. This space station is the space borne part of a mining operation
on the planet surface.

Yes, I used RANDOM to do it.

The coppery Skin is a metal texture, and I modified the Rusty_Iron(?) texture
to overlay on it.  I hate perfectly clean spacecraft.

But that's a great idea.  I was originally planning to put millions
of small detail objects on the surface.  I may still.  but converting
to a bump map may do the trick.
