Well, I played around with KB's code and made some slight alterations and
got the following images.
Render time for each was in the range of 3-5 minutes. Let me know which you
prefer.
Once a winner is decided, I'll post my changes in
povray.binaries.scene-files, should anyone be interested.

I like that second one ( bottom) a lot. It emulates well what the physics of a
light sabre would be. What changes did you make ? - I'm definetly interested.

Actually, the main change I made was in changing the densities from planar
to cylindrical and adjusting the colors to match. I felt it gave a smoother
transition, giving a better glow effect. The main difference between the two
versions is the emission value and/or the scaling of the blade (is it just
me or does scaling an object with a media defined also scale the intensity
of the media?).
Do you want me to post the code with the changes, or is what I've told you
enough to work with?

I went through media variances to the nth to wind up with what I felt happiest
with but if you wouldn't mind sharing your code that would be great. The inner
blade on the bottom image seems to have a sine-wave like effect that, despite
all my tweaking and playing, never stumbled across and I would like to know how
you came up with that. Thanks

The scaling should only need to be inversely proportional.
That sine wave is also present in the first image if you look closely;
apparently only brought out better in the second image.
There must be some turbulence in there, you both should know that or
not.
And if not, we must all have our speakers to close to the monitor.
I like this light sabre more than others I have seen (sorry "others").

Ok, I'll put the adjusted file I have in povray.binaries.scene-files.
