Dittoed from povray.general:
I've finished a preliminary POV World Map (39K) at:

 http://members.aol.com/inversez/private/lpovwrld.jpg

Tough to get the hemispheres situated well enough for all, and the
"pins" pointing out the locations are as good as I've come up with so
far. I may change the entire look of it later but for now I'll build
upon this one as other coordinates arrive.
I realize maybe a flat map might be more suitable but there's nothing
good about the look of it.
I'm asking then for everyone to please send me any
latitudinal/longitudinal coordinates (guess if you can) with a
SUBJECT:COORDINATES to inv### [at] aolcom Although if someone can't
even make a good guess, keep with the nearest large town or city as you
post to this thread. But again, please do email me if you will and I'll
apply these to my later world map images. However, and this is
important, this may all come to an end sooner than later (maybe not
though) so no guarantees on the later images, also I probably will
adhere to more my own ideas as to how to do these for reasons already
realized while making this first one. Keep that in mind as well, you can
always make your own you know... Thanks all.

I believe it's a map of the locations of the people who resonded to a
recent thread in povray.general "Where are you?" I believe. People
responded with where they lived and I think Bob did a map of where
everyone is on the globe. I'm pretty sure that's it....

Hey man, that's great.

From what I can see with the shallow angle over scandinavia, you've already
got my position, so I don't need to send you longitude/latitude... :-)

Thanks for picking up on my general "shot-into-the-blue" request for someone
doing such a map. I didn't think of a 3D version then, but this is surely
better than a flat map!

Greetings,
Johannes.

Yes, it was dark and still is a bit so. Thought I'd go with a night time
look on the world with POV-Ray user locations acting as city lights seen
from space kind of theme. It is a little brighter now, not much though,
and the positions are marked more clearly. Another update has already
been made too (so check your markers people!). Still another page-only
update is about to be done again as well.

The problem I see with the current method is the countries with the
largest population centers are rotated virtualy out of site and those
places likely to have the least showing demographicaly are in plain
site. As you say it's your map, and you'll do as you wish, only I wish
that you would wish, to do it a little differently. There is no way I
could check my marker bcause there is no way I can see it the way it's
positioned now.

It's a refreshing move from the anxiety ridden posts of earlier days so
I wanted to jump in.
And I think you have sent me your lat/lon, in fact I know you have.
Must've changed your mind eh? Precision mindedness get the better of
you?
Btw, the PoV World Map is much better now, no more blue ICBM's launching
into space. And I took Ken's advice about the 3 views instead of just
too. I did some more experimenting and no 2 hemisphere map worked as
well for all points of the planet.
Thanks Ken. And thanks anyway Stephen L. but the flat world is not to be
(yet anyway).
Check out the update so far, everyone. More additions to come but the
way it's done probably isn't going to change immediately.

 http://members.aol.com/wrld0rigin/povworld.htm

PS. I made a serious mistake on the latest update at first, I had saved
to disk only not ftp so the new Place and Email fields were not added
until this afternoon.
Hope I can get the place names of the few who have dropped by since
yesterday who did not write to the "Where..." thread at povray.general.
Or I'll just look it up myself and figure it has to be right.
Reminds me, a text file of all this will be there later too, just for
posterity's sake.

Bob, I have an idea :
the earth-map could be mapped INSIDE a sphere (well, the code is
the same anyway), put the markers inside too, and render it with
a cylindrical camera located at the center of the sphere; you'll
get a whole, single rectangular map of the Pov-World...

Cheers,
Fabien.

Alas, that would be the reason for not doing that though, a rectangular,
regular ol' world map like the one on my wall. But as Stephen Lavedas
showed me a rectanglur picture wouldn't be half bad either. I may try
various ways over time. But for now I'm concentrating on keeping up with
the email swamping my inbox ever since I put a link on my POV Ring page.
Actually I don't have a clue if anyones actually coming in direct from
the internet. But then there's names I haven't seen in here before ;)
