It certainly looks better than the previous version (the shadow on the
mountains indeed looked bad). A few comments: I think the rocket looks a
bit toy-like. And the sky looks a bit flat. The clouds should be smaller,
and there should be a gradient towards the horizon.

Well, I should speak... I never finish a scene. When I get to the details,
I quit. I think I'm too lazy to do raytracing (that's why I let the
computer raytrace ;-). No, just kidding. My most detailed model was the
Millennium Falcon: it's still not finished because I haven't worked on it
since August 1998. Wonder what this has to do with your image... I think
it's just getting a bit late here : it's 1 AM in the morning (yes, I know
that's the twice the same).

the rocket is intentionally like that - thats the way the pulp magazines
always seemed to depict them. i'm still tweaking the sky. i need to
finish this one by Feb. 28th, i plan on entering it into the IRTC.

If the model allows it (probably not...) it might look more realistic if
you can open the jaws of the skull. It would make the unfortunate explorer
look less... serene, I suppose.

hmm. i'll give that a try - yes, the model does allow it - it's a great
skull - on www.3dcafe.com, in anatomy, called helskull - was originally
a lightwave object i think.

Actually, it does remind me of the image "mars.jpg" which was
entered into the Dec 1998 round.... the author even mentioned
he was considering using Canada as the nationality of
the space traveler.

But this is sufficiently original that it isn't a problem.
I like it! The "retro" ship is a nice touch.

WRT the mouth -- I don't think hellskul.zip has well-defined teeth.....
you might leave the mouth shut.

If you want, you're welcome to a mesh I did a couple of years ago
in TriSpectives pro of a retro rocket (he he he):
http://home.hiwaay.net/~crispen/worlds/rocket/2/rocket.wrl
If you need a VRML 1.0 model instead of a VRML 97 model, use
http://home.hiwaay.net/~crispen/worlds/rocket/1/rocket.wrl
(there's also some included files you'll need, but they're in
the same directory).

I haven't converted it to POV yet, but it shouldn't be that hard.
Paul Thiessen's vrml2pov converter
(http://cherubino.med.jhmi.edu/~paul/vrml2pov/)
breaks on the VRML 2 version, but it might work if you get rid
of the USEs. Or you can use Crossroads on the VRML 1 model.

A polar bear is just a rectangular bear in a different coordinate system.
