My goal ultimately is to be able to simulate convincingly (not neccesarily
accurately) The behavior of a bubble or groups of bubbles rising in a
fluid, such as water. For this I'm not really using much in the way of
accurate physics models. Though that may loosen things up for more
flexibility. I believe it's possible, and even reletively easy (though not
for me) to simulate bubble shapes that deform, rise, split apart and rejoin
freely.
This animation shows my first step, of making a rough simulation of the
behavior of the air particles in a bubble. The next step, which I shall ask
your help on, is identifying the top most particles of the clump, so I can
apply force to them.
Please let me know what you think of the animation and the question. it is
in divx 5 format, if you need a different codec let me know. Thanks

what video codecs do you have installed? do you have any xvid or fddshow?
Would you accept a bink file or a self playing bink?

Get the latest DivX codec - version 5.05.

Regarding the Codec:
Best is always to use MPG1. That's a codec which
runs for everyone. Even if you may use smaller resolutions
and less detail (which isn't exactly needed at this point
anyways), no one will complain. And you can still post
larger versions (to the 1MB limit) and other Codecs
if asked for.
Regarding the Bubbles:
Perhaps shoot a (or several of em) trace() at it and see
if they hit the bubble in question or a different one first.
I'd have to think longer to come up with something more
useful and efficient.

I have DivX3.11, 4.12, 5.02 and ffdshow 0.4.6 build 4616 (hmm, that looks
old :/ )

I'd rather see an MPEG :)

The computer gods are working against me on that mpg1 thing.
Most of the links to CMPEG on povray.org were broken, no other software I
know of works to convert still images to mpg, coverting from avi to mpg is
kind of a bad solution, and once I did manage to download CMPEG I can't
quite get it to work. It refuses to open my TGA files. "Couldn't open
'attracters001.tga'"
oh well. I don't have all day to waste on figuring out why. Sorry :/
as for trace, that's not a bad idea, but it will only work if there's
objects there that can coorespond to points, I think. and that won't always
be the case if I am to turn those points into surfaces rather than spheres.
Though it does give me some options to explore. I have continued ideas in
the P.A group.

If you are on windows, render to png instead which are smaller files with
no image loss. Then use Tmpgenc with the png plugin.
http://www.tmpgenc.net/
http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.utilities/15796/
It also does Divx, and most any other encoder on your system. If you are on
linux, I have heard that it runs with wine. I need to test that out soon.

I feel like a tmpgenc evangelist.
