Just posted a new page with four recent animations - all 100% POV. If you
don't have a fast connection, probably not worth the trouble.

How about using a video format which is a bit less closed? Even a DivX avi
would have been better (I can play those in this Sparc Solaris, and at home
I don't have realplayer installed simply because I have severely averse
feelings towards it).

They look very interesting, I would love to download them. But
Realplayer..... no... I have it (although I also have averse feelings to it)
but my connection is not fast enough, and when I scroll back to see
something that was already downloaded, it tries to download it again.. That
way, I just won't be able to play the file.. I tried to download to my
harddisk but it doesn't work. Maybe it would be possible with a download
manager, but I don't have one.
Regards,
Hugo

Sorry for the inconvenience. I will put up some MPEG 1 versions but with the
tests I have done, DivX doesn';t retain enough of the color and the motion
is not very smooth. Let me see what else will work.

I guess you're not using it properly then. Though I
haven't encoded any divx-video myself yet, the kind
of video I have seen look lossless, colorwise and
artifact-wise.
No offense meant, but why else should DIVX be so
high in demand, if not for those reasons?

I don't like realplayer as well, much like I don't
like the the new Quicktime. Those damn background
programms are simply annoying and not really suited
for CPU-intensive tasks...

Quicktime is the one program that reliably screws up my win2k sessions - it
garbles all my icons (incl. the min/max/close buttons) when I run it, and only a
reboot fixes it.

DivX is in no way lossless. You need a rather large bitrate in order
to get such high quality that artifacts are not seen.
However, the advantage of DivX (and every MPEG-4 codec in general) is
that you need a whole lot less bitrate to get a good-quality image than
with MPEG-1.

Well I don't really have any interest in distributing this stuff over the
Web, so I haven't explored all the options in any of the encoders. - I just
put up the links and mentioned it here so the Group could have a look.
Mostly the stuff goes out on DV or DVD. Maybe in a few years the whole
compression discussion will be moot!
