Here's something I just implemented: Particles may now
have different lifetimes. I'm not too sure if its very
obvious in this animation, but some particles dissipate
quicker than others, and thus, its not like everything
gets dimmer and dimmer all the time, but its also
that some vanish more quickly than others.

And if you want to complain that its not obvious, then
just think of this as a nice animation I did for testing
purposes... ;-)

Hope everyone can see it, was encoded with TMPEG-Enc,
so please, no "I couldn't see it" replies. ;-)

Regards,
Tim

I coul...

sorry. It look great. I must admit that I couldn't tell that some
particles were fading at different rates, but it looks very nice none
the less.

Putting POV code on the web? Make it look pretty with POV2HTML...

Don't know about variable fading - it's not too evident. But certainly a
very pretty thing to look at.

Actually I couldn't see it, because I bought a hardware video decoder that
sends most video to TV, even if the TV is turned off.. ;o) I'll have to
fix this.. not your fault..

I saw it with Virtual Dub. I have seen this animation before. I wonder if
Rune's PS could bounce as well.. Are you going to release yours?

Rune made his animation after he saw mine. The
typical POVer ("Hey, I like that! Can I achieve something
like that myself?" :-)

This version is a little different than the former one,
as some eye-candy has been removed (colored "dots"
where a particle hit a will, for example, this feature
is likely to be cut out, as it isn't really consistent), but
IMHO it appeared to show off the most effect of
different lifetimes... Though it didn't, but I got some
nice replies, so thats fine with me! :-)

And yes, mine is to be released, I'm working hard to
get its functionality finished and make its current
state as usable as possible, though I've already admitted
on several occasions that the way the system is set
might be a little difficult, but its also non I/O, so setting
all kinds of stuff is sort of required...

WHEN its going to be released, I dont know yet...

Regards,
Tim

I'd be interested in seeing this kind of animation without any of the particles being
removed.
By that I mean leave a trail of particles behind, so that it looks as though a
many-fingered
organic shape is growing. I hope that's clear.

When released, will your particle system cost much to use? ;-)

All the best,

Andy Cocker

It is clear...
Well, about the effect of leaving particle
trails... It's a non I/O system (mentioned
many times before, but its such a rare thing,
that it tends to be forgotten everytime I
post something), so I can't, as Rune's
or JRG's system might do, place a particle
at every calculation step.

What I could try though, is to write a small
script using my IO-Macros (which may be
found on my website for those interested),
which saves the position of the particle for
every frame, and these are loaded...

You gave me some idea there... I'll see what
I can do.

> When released, will your particle system cost much to use? ;-)

It won't cost a thing. I haven't given much thought to
a TOS until the discussion sparked by Rune came up.

What I'd just like is that I'd be the only one distributing
my system, and if anyone makes additions or plug-ins
(though I doubt it, the complex nature of the system
isn't very intuitive and friendly to people not involved in
the initial coding process, e.g. anyone else besides me :-),
I'd make links to those sites or, if need be, even host
them myself. And if someone thinks I deserve credit,
they may credit me. Aside of that, I'd just like to see
finished images/animations, just to be proud of what
others have done with my system. If they make money
off of it (the picture or animation, not the system, that is),
thats fine with me. I'll get some fame, thats all I want
from POV (for now, until I name myself Gilles T. :-)

Regards,
Tim

Yes, I guessed that was to be the case, but I couldn't resist the slightly
tongue-in-cheek
question after the 'other' TOS discussion.

All the best,

Andy Cocker
