Hello,
I have been pondering this for many months, and then it suddenly came to me.
I use Moray with the Enzmann animation plugin. It took many hours of
experimentation to get it the way I wanted it. I used a heightfield merged
with a cube for the visable surface. Next I want to try to make it so you
can see into the water better, while still seeing the sky, and then multiple
ripples happening at different times, criss-crossing each other.

If you use a number_of_waves [integer] in global_settings {} that should
create a random set of ripple origins. I don't know Moray but unless you
set it yourself or the program did there ought to already be 10 origins by
default.
For getting a look into the water you'll want fade_color and fade_distance
or media or fog. None of which is much good without underlying objects at
various depths. Also, a specular highlight of the sunlight always enhances
the surface.

Sorry, I completely ignored the fact you were doing a kind of surface
displacement. Not sure if you're using POV output to get the HF ripples or
not. If not please excuse my ignorance. End of long day (in the morning,
yeah) for me.

All details are excellent, but I feel like I'm missing something in the center.
Shouldn't there be a drop plop up & down? and it seems to go perfectly flat in
the center too soon...

Greg,
You are probably right. I tried tossing some very tiny pebbles into still
water today to see what happens. It happens so fast that it's hard to tell
with absolute certainty, but what I saw was a tall plume of water where the
pebble went in, then a sort of chaotic jumble of turbulance before the
circular pattern formed. By the time the concentric rings were visable and
moving outward, the center was flat. A collection of stop motion photos of
the real thing would be helpful. The scene I depicted in this animation is
more like what happens when the ripples are generated from below, such as a
fish just barely breaking the surface. I also noticed today that water
beetles moving about on the surface constantly create new rings of ripples,
and the center stays perfectly flat.

I have some links to photos of drops falling into water. Maybe they are
helpful.
