seriously, how big are codecs anyway? not very. i don't have a problem
downloading and installing a new one if i'm just showed where to get
it. incidentally, i already had divx before this big discussion as it
can be used to convert dvds to avi (or something like that) and dvd
captures make for good hollywood graphics study material.

Players play. Codecs code and decode. That's the beauty of it, a
player can use any codec and a codec may be used in any player (or any
video processing program for that matter).

The only players that I can think of that don't use shared codecs are
MPEG, Smacker, Bink and FLI players. That sucks because you can't use,
say, Bink in, say, Adobe Premiere, while you can use DivX;-)

And no, DivX;-) is not available through automatic download. Maybe the
original DivX is but I don't know if they are compatible.

By direct download, either you (but you don't remember) or someone
else using that machine. Maybe it was installed by some app or game.
Either way, ifyou don't trust me, remove it from your computer and see
if Media Player will succeed in downloading it. It didn't here so why
should it work on your machine?

Nope, Alexander is smart, but at 4 years old he is not quite ready to
break my password.

Because some people seem to have trouble with windows that I don't have.
I don't have to reboot everytime I blink, I don't have notepad lock up the
system, I don't have to reinstall windows every other week, and I don't find
these problems with WP.

You're well known to have the only working copy of Windows ever
shipped :)

Anyway, it's just not available for download on microsoft.com . Not
even if I browse it with lynx.
