This is a son of Frankenstein's monster considering it's made up of 3 ideas
gathered from around here lately at the newsgroups.  I made a Newton's Balls
because of zwatts' post here and did it with the glowing spot idea at
p.newusers where Heather Pinnix asked about firefly glows.  Also the Sun was
something I started doing because Zilvah asked how to make one at
p.text.tutorials.
Not much else to it.  Just thought people might like to see it.  The balls
blink as they make contact, getting dimmer as they lose momentum.  Not
realistic stuff and somewhat fast-motion I think.

Can you re-educate me: does emitting media cast shadows? Do these balls cast
shadows because they are in fact light sources; is there a way to make meida

Emissing media does not cast a shadow. Absorbing or scattering media
will if the container object uses filtered transparency and not
transmitting.

Thanks for answering Peter, except the question is two-fold really.  I used
lights inside to help facilitate the glow or else other objects would not have
had shadows.  No radiosity had been used but I guess that would have done some
shadowing if I had.  These media container objects were incorporated into a
'looks_like' inside of each light source so they were shadowless regardless of
filtered or transmitted transparency  ;-)

I just had a very odd idea -- how about using radiosity and no-image?
Add a highly ambient white ball with each media sphere and give it
no_image (in MegaPOV), then turn on radiosity. Might just work.

Media does not normally cast light, if that is what Greg M. Johnson was 
asking. Scattering media will show shadows cast through it, and both 
scattering and absorbing media will cast shadows(blocking light) if 
their container uses filter.
The radiosity in MegaPOV takes media into account, so this can be used 
to mimic light coming from emitting media. You might get faster or more 
controllable results by using area lights, though.

I think no_image will also mean no radiosity, which kind of wreaks that 
idea. I'm not certain, though...

'area_light' has that unfortunate tendency to be useless in animations.
Without the 'jitter' added to it the banding effect is almost never suitable,
with it it could never be.  I used it in this animation figuring the number
and dimness of each wouldn't have shadows which are noticed easily.  Using
radiosity in some manner could certainly be a workaround but then, as you say,
not as much control over such faked shadows I guess.
