'area_light' has that unfortunate tendency to be useless in animations.
Without the 'jitter' added to it the banding effect is almost never suitable,
with it it could never be. I used it in this animation figuring the number
and dimness of each wouldn't have shadows which are noticed easily. Using
radiosity in some manner could certainly be a workaround but then, as you say,
not as much control over such faked shadows I guess.
