I was playing with Moray and the animation plugin earlier on, and this is
what came out at the end after about 6 or so 'hang on, that won't work'
moments :)
What I find intriguing is how a purely mechanical system (all components
rotate at the same speed relative to their parent object) can produce
motion which occasionally has an organic look to it.
Or maybe I'm just hallucinating. (possibly more likely) <grin>
The scene consists of the grand total of 22 primitives, 1 plane, one
sphere (a sky sphere, just in case I decided to use a metallic or
reflective texture on the arm) ten cylinders and ten boxes.

Don't know if I'd call that organic... well tentacle-like in a way I suppose.
Has the look of a bicycle or motorcycle chain. Ever have one of those break?
Kind of reminds me of that.

Looks real cool! But what's the purpose? Well, a purpose or not, it's cool
anyway. It's a real smooth animation b.t.w. How many f.p.s did u use???

Well, since I was trained as a marine biologist, I tend to see organic
aspects in lots of things.
Specifically, it reminded me of either a nematocyst discharging, or a
tendril on a climbing plant coiling around a support.
And not ever having had a motorcycle, I think I can safely say that I've
never had the dubious honour of a chain breaking on me :)

It's 120 frames, encoded at 30fps. Oh, and at 140Kbits/sec too, IIRC.
Oh, and I remembered to remove the start frame to get a smooth transition
on looping. I find it easier to define the start and end points as
identical in Moray, render out to images, then remove either the start or
end frame when encoding.
And it has no purpose :) It was just something I was playing with that I
thought turned out quite pretty. And it gave me something to try out the
VideoMach on too.

looks cool, organic? hmmm, not quite, but its still nice and quite
captivating really.
how about posting the mdl in moray.bin :))

Like I said, I'm a biologist by training, so I can spot organic analogues
rather easily :)

Personally I find nematocysts to discharge a little less uniformly, but I know
what you mean, and yes it is a cool little animation. As a marine biologist,
have you found any other means of utilizing pov-ray to your advantage?

Nope. I did the degree, thoroughly enjoyed myself at university, got the
qualification, and now want to work in IT support :) The main reason
being I like living where I am, and don't particularly want to move.
I started working on a horseshoe crab using sPatch, but got bored after a
while. Maybe I'll pick it up again and try to finish it off.
