Yes, I've used GUM for the past 4 years, but I've gotten to the point where I'd
much rather use the text editor for everything but bsplines.

That's fine - just like to know what is lacking in the modellers.

I am not so sure that it is a problem of "lacking" as it is a matter
of productivity. I have tried countless GUI based modelling programs
and by the time I go through the various song and dance routines
you must do to get a few object positioned in 3D space and then assign
material properties to them I can usualy type it out in POV-Ray and
have done three or four test renders in the same amount of time.
This does not hold true for everyone but it sure does for me.
I think it would be fun to race someone sometime with computers
set up side by side to see if the hand coder can beat the GUI
modeller for a given scene.

I wouldn't bet on you (nothing personal) if the modeled scene weren't too
complex to begin with. Having seen (and used) GUI modelers I'd say a person
could click a few buttons and enter several fields to get a whole scene file
done fairly quickly. The main thing is experience, and in fact Moray seems
pretty intuitive to me although I still haven't tried it enough to know it well.
A more complex scene involves too much thinking to compete against the clock or
another person. That wouldn't be a test of modeler vs. text editor anymore.
But I would cheer you on, being a text editor enthusiast myself.

I have been using AutoCad for 6 years and I use hand coded Povray
whenever possible for those kind of jobs.
I also use moray and breeze modeler but prefer the text editor for
anything but quick and sloppy jobs.

That's an interesting idea, the 'race' idea.

I think so too. The one thing that would have to be addressed
though would be that the test be fair to both the hand coder
and the GUI user. It would be easy to design a test that would
give an unfair advantage to one or the other but to design one
to be equally challenging to both would take some careful
consideration.

hmmmm..... what could that be....
Maybe reproducing a known object? Or a picture that could be posted in the
n.g. and the goal is to reproduce the picture as best as possible.
