My only experience with animation is using Fast Movie Processor to
crunch a bunch of povray bitmaps into an AVI.  I saw the post on the
TMPGEnc software.  I read the FAQ, but like many FAQs, it actually
assumes a bit more than I know.  Will it convert my AVI into a VCD?
Reading through all the FAQ made me think that it will.

If it will, are there any special rules that I have to follow in creating
my AVI, such as frame rate or size?  Any special rules when writing
the file to CD?

Yes

Use one of the Video CD template that come with it.  You will get the best 
results if your AVI aspect ratio matches the target VCD aspect ratio. Click  
the load button to choose your template and then click the settings button 
to see the horizontal and vertical settings.

TMPGEnc does not burn to CD.  You will need another application to do that.  
Nero works well for me.  For more on VCDs with TMPGEnc and Nero check out

Thanks for those links, Tom.  They look to provide the kind of details
I was looking for.  I'm still uncertain about a few things like frame rate
and size, but I think I'll go ahead and walk through the procedure and
see what turns out.  If it won't play I'm only out about thirty cents for a
CD.

Well,  I burned one!  I can't wait to get home to see if it plays!
Even after years of experience with the fickle ways of the com-
puter, I can't help but be optimistic about it working.  My
reason is that the software made it look pretty much like a no-
brainer.  I used an AVI I churned out with FMP this morning,
TMPGEnc to convert to MPG, and Nero to burn it to CD.

I'll probably come back tomorrow whipped with my tail between
my legs, but it won't be the first or the last time.

Hi Andy,

WAHOOOOO!  Amazing!  It worked!  My first try at it and it
worked.  The software was excellent!  Another reason I had
faith in it was that supposedly TMPGEnc will flag a bad con-
version.

It looked really cool on the TV, too!  I had used Micha's earth
file and experimented with earth rotation a bit and then ran a
sequence of a thousand and then crunched it into an AVI the
following day.  It was 640x480 with a 15 frame/sec rate.
TMPGEnc hammered it into VCD shape.  There was almost
no tweaking (selecting nondefault formats) involved.

I notice that the MPG2 format is only 30 days trial on the
program.  Is that what I'm using or will the VCD conversion
continue to work on the freeware version?

No, you are using MPEG-1 for VCD. MPEG-2 is used if you were to create an animation
for an
S-VCD (which would look much better - comparable to DVD, and you may like to try, as
you are
rendering your frames, I think, sufficiently large)
