I am currently using a spline to create a path for animation in a scene...

It would be nice if I could interactively steer my way rather than being
held to a fixed path. Possibly by using key strokes to indicate "a bit more
to the left" etc....

Has anybody some sort of routine that could be used in such a way?

I think you need modeller.
For example Moray at http://www.stmuc.com/moray/ .

Hmm... You might be able to create a system where you could render a scene,
then edit another file that when you rerender the scene would read that file
information and adjust the camera accordingly. You would want to keep saving
the images as they came out and renaming them, of course.

The Spline Macro File (http://www.geocities.com/ccolefax/spline) allows you
to simply define a list of keypoints.  You can then quickly preview (from a
fixed camera point) the path the spline takes through the scene, and easily
shift or add points to adjust the path the way you want.  An automatic
animation function is included that will fly the camera along the path -
rendering at low resolution and reduced quality settings should allow you to
preview and adjust the motion path reasonably quickly (if not in realtime).

I am currently using the nice spline routine (works really well )  but I was
interested to go to the next step where I could really stear a course and
make decisions between each frame .... just like a walk in the garden.

If you want to do this on a frame-by-frame basis, it might be feasible to
create a utility that will move the camera through a scene interactively,
using POV to render the scene at each point.  I suspect the process would be
too slow to be of much use, however!  A modeller or non-raytraced preview
seems to be what you're looking for...
