The March/April 2013 Stills Challenge: *Woman*, has ended.
See http://www.tc-rtc.co.uk/display/index.html
TC-RTC members are all kindly invited to vote for the uploaded images.
As usual, they can do this till the end of the current month. Do not
forget to vote for all the images if you want your votes to be valid!
The Stills Challenges will continue in a new form from now on. Instead
of the fixed two months intervals, we shall propose variable length
challenges, possibly two at the same time. Details about this will
follow later.
Also from now on, the new Challenge topics will be proposed by us,
instead of members voting from a list. We shall also drop the book
titles list although we may draw inspiration from it. For the new
Challenge, we shall use the member votes for the last time.
Thus, the new upcoming Challenge will run for *four months* (May/August
2013) and its topic will be: *Elements of Geology*.
With a longer Challenge length we not only hope to draw more
participation. We also want to provide time to participants for even
higher quality images, artistically and technically. We challenge you to
go beyond what you thought were your own limits!
We hope you will enjoy these new approaches.
At the drawing board!
Stephen & Thomas, TC-RTC Administrators

I'm almost led to believe that you were specifically trying to get my attention
with this one :) Nice broad phrasing, too; there's a lot of room for
interpreting the theme... I might actually get something going this time around,
no promises though ;)

We *always* have you in mind, Sam ;-)

That would be fantastic.

The biggest challenge right now is coming up with an idea... what elements to
portray? and in what literal or metaphorical sense? I've posted some gravel
renderings to the TINA CHeP forums as a start:
http://tinachepforum.forumup.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=236&mforum=tinachepforum The
system might make it into a final rendering, or it might not :)

Well, I finally found some time to comment - not critique, just my .02
- This is a point I've seen mentioned several times, so I won't claim
rights: My attention span is limited, I like challenges but I rarely have
the patience to maintain 'eye contact' more than a week or so. This is
not only a personal defect - rarely a week goes by that an unforeseen
event causes a change in course here.
- I have presented several images in the past, more to see if I could
get them ready in time or not. I would rather have presented them in the
hope of learning or receiving constructive criticism, but I never had any
of that. Maybe because there is no real 'community' around TCCHEP? After
all the discussion are here on irtc, which (for me) takes an effort to
sit down and read, and not on a dedicated mailing list. (Is there even
mention on TC Chep on how to contact participants on this media?)
Do new people interested in ray-tracing even know that these News fora
exist? And how to connect to them?
- Taking into account the previous point, I do propose a voting system
for the comment section. I believe constructive comments should be
awarded...
- I sincerely hope the new system will work better! I have the impression
though that a more continuous contact is necessary to maintain the
fire burning...

The constructive criticism thing sounds good in theory, but you’ll have to
explicitly subordinate yourself to others if you expect to receive
constructive criticism, and most people aren’t willing to do that.
Unsolicited offerings of constructive criticism are almost always met with
resistance.
In a perfect world, we as audience would just openly react to images and we
as artists would in time discover how to get the reactions we desire. This
isn’t a perfect world. People want compliments, and if the images are being
judged, people want to know why you didn’t give them three 20s. "10-8-6" is
better than "Nice Lighting! 10-8-6."
So, you’ve got to react solely with numbers (no compliments) or articulate
your reaction with text (warts and all). This is guaranteed to make you
unpopular, because, for whatever reason, artists almost invariably read your
criticisms as “you should have …” rather than “I’d have liked it more if
…”.
Secret balloting is the best way to keep your friends.
