The constructive criticism thing sounds good in theory, but you’ll have to
explicitly subordinate yourself to others if you expect to receive
constructive criticism, and most people aren’t willing to do that.
Unsolicited offerings of constructive criticism are almost always met with
resistance.
In a perfect world, we as audience would just openly react to images and we
as artists would in time discover how to get the reactions we desire. This
isn’t a perfect world. People want compliments, and if the images are being
judged, people want to know why you didn’t give them three 20s. "10-8-6" is
better than "Nice Lighting! 10-8-6."
So, you’ve got to react solely with numbers (no compliments) or articulate
your reaction with text (warts and all). This is guaranteed to make you
unpopular, because, for whatever reason, artists almost invariably read your
criticisms as “you should have …” rather than “I’d have liked it more if
…”.
Secret balloting is the best way to keep your friends.
