I'm thinking of entering my first animation, and I've done a very crude
'concept' test, which likely doesn't resemble what my final entry will be.
http://bwphosting.com/~tyler/output.avi
It's a 7MBish DivX, running time 1 minute.
Comments much appreciated!

That's a cool animation. I'm not sure building a lego model counts as evolution,
perhaps if you had the model change during the animation in response to things
happening around it (e.g. it goes underwater and re-builds itself as a
submarine!).
As far as the animation itself goes, it's impressive for such early work. I'll
try to make some suggestions though I'm sure it will change a lot as you develop
it: The movement of the bricks seems a little wierd because they change velocity
instantly, it would look better if they gradually decelerated rather than just
coming to a sudden stop. The movement of the camera is very nice though it seems
to focus on a small detail of the finished plane when I'd expect it to pull back
and show the whole thing.
BTW, if you made it with povray I suggest posting work in progress version to
povray.binaries.animations, as people there will be more inclined to download
movies. Oh, and you might want to turn on anti-aliasing because that should help
reduce the file size (7MB seems a bit much for this!).

Theres an idea, all that lego building could get kinda tedious though! I'll
probably end up building a house or something.

The camera is very simple, it's just rotating around a point. Basically the
same for the peices, simple linear motion. I hadn't planned to post it, as
it was really just a simple 'proof of concept', but I thought it came out
nice ;)

Didn't because of the size. Why would anti-aliasing help the file size?

I'm very impressed, my proof of concept animations normally look terrible!
> Didn't because of the size. Why would anti-aliasing help the file size?
Video compressors work better on smoother more natural images. It takes them
more room to describe a jagged edge than a smooth one. Obviously the fact that
it's such a long animation will still cause problems, but smoother images should
save a bit of space.

Weird. Taking Teks advice, I was able to get much better commersion after
using Antialising. Same video, now just 2MB, hosted on a different server:

I had the same issue as Greg before. Now I can get the file, but I can't
play it. I get either invalid file format, or no filters available to play
this file. The fourcc code in the AVI says DIVX. I even upgraded from
5.02 to 5.05 and I still can't see it.

Hrrm, not quite sure what to say to that. Plays fine here. Encoded with:
mencoder -mf on:w=320:h=240:fps=30 renders/\*.tga -ovc lavc -lavcopts
vbitrate=256:vhq -o output.avi

I can't play this one either, though I could play the first one fine. Windows
media player gives me an error saying "The specified module could not be found",
which isn't normally what it does if it doesn't know the movie type (it normally
tries to look online for codecs).

Correction, that's exactly the message media player gives when it can't find the
codec. It just happened to me on another video!
