Hello,

When I install POV-Ray 3.5 I get following message:

Required Component Missing

POV-Ray for Windows requires at least version 4.72 of the Common Control DLL
'comctl32.dll'. This has not been detected on your system.

This file can be obtained from Microsoft. It typically comes as part of
Internet Explorer v4 or later. It can also be obtained as a stand-alone
installation.
===========================

It was the latest MS OS: Windows Server 2003. It has the latest browser and
the latest IE. Obviously it has the latest comctl32.dll. It is based on XP
and I was able to run all Windows apps without any problems.

Is there any way to bypass "required component" check?

Are you sure you did not installed any outdated application before, such that
could overwrite comctl32.dll with older version without version comparison?
Are you sure comctl32.dll is located on path? Or older is located on path as
well but at the place where it is founded quicker? Try copy newest version of
comctl32.dll into folder where POV installer is located. Helped ?

Yes, it does. How do you think other apps work? It is in D:\WINDOWS\system32
(my system installed on D drive). IE cannot work without it. Its version is
5.82.3763.0.

I am sure. Windows Server 2003 protects system files. Just to be extra sure
I checked version of comctl32 manually. It is 5.82.3763.0.

Yes. First directory in my path is D:\WINDOWS\system32. That is exactly
where comctl32.dll is located. Yep, version 5.82.3763.0.

No. I don't know what exactly is "place where it is found quicker" but first
directory of my path is system32.

I tried this suggestion hoping for some voodoo magic, but no, unfortunately
it didn't help.

I looked at Wise knowledge base but could not find anything specific. Also
searching in google not helped. Would you like to go to wise.com and look there
with best descripton of your problem? Perhaps it is already solved...

I was unsuccessful as well --- Wise KB, Google --- no luck. :-( Most
probably it is not related to Wise per se. Maybe it is wrong comparison
operation somewhere in installation scripts... Is there .zip version of
distribution module like we used to have in good old times?

Problem solved in rather unconventional way: I installed POV-Ray on Win2k
computer, archived the whole directory from "Program Files", archived
HKLM\Software\POV-Ray and HKCU\\Software\POV-Ray registry keys, and
unarchived it on my Windows Server 2003 computer. A lot of hassle but I am
back in business.

BTW, does anybody know why Wise Installer was used? There are good free open
source alternatives. I personally prefer NSIS
(http://www.nullsoft.com/free/nsis/) --- simple, flexible, fully
scriptable --- anybody can go and fix installation script.

Jumping in late here but, i'll bet your problem was that you have
a "non-standard" windows setup and the installation script was looking
for C:\WINNT\system32\comctl32.dll instead of $SYSTEMDIR\comctl32.dll

As far as I can tell your problem was a bug in WISE. I do the correct checks
with the correct system-dependent path. I have hopefully worked-around this
in v3.51.

Because I've been using it for about eight years, and they also donated a copy
of InstallMaster 8.1 to get me back up to date.

I'm open to change, if someone wants to write an NSIS version, I'll give them the
existing Wise script (it's more or less readable ascii) as a guide.
