I've been trying to get kpovmodeller to work in the newest version of
ubuntu. Everything works fine except the wireframe feature, which just
appears as black boxes. I've found the same error reported in a few
other forums, but no answers as to what is causing it.

I don't think its a openGL issue, as inactivating openGL rendering
doesn't fix the problems. Likewise, as far as I can tell the KDE
libraries are installed properly so I don't think that's an issue either.

Anyone know if there is a way to fix this, or alternatively, know of a
forum where there may be more then 1 or 2 kpovmodeller users around?

Thanx

Bryan

How about just moving to a real modeller, like Wings 3D or Blender and
povray exporters? They also have far larger communities, specially Blender.

There's a known nvidia graphics driver bug in 8.10. I couldn't find the bug that
describes the problem at launchpad-- the one I subscribed to seems to have
disappeared, but here's one that describes a similar prob:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-settings/+bug/286424

Because I'm not modeling. I'm trying to modify the output of a protein
structure prediction program that outputs protein structures as pov.
The structures themselves are made entirely of primitives (spheres and
cylinders mostly); often 10,000+ of them per protein structure.
kpovmodeller allows me to select, move or delete these visually;
wings3d, etc would not, and its next to impossible using text-editing.

Blender has a script that reads in protein structures in the PDB format,
if your program exports to that:

Follow the instructions at bottom of the article.

Hmm, and BTW, following a few hints in that page, I reach an open-source
project for molecular visualization that seems much more well suited for
this specific task:

http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/

It was used to render some of the pictures in the previous page...

Thanx for the ideas.  I am already using VDM for much of the work;
unfortunately, not everything I am doing is possible in VDM (or other
modeling programs that I have tried). I'll try the blender plugin, but
if its anything like directly importing STL I'll not be able to do the
alterations I am attempting.

Thanx again,

Bryan
